The Sullivan Script Tonight's Homework - Thursday, February 9, 2012: Math: p. 82 Spelling: Write each lesson 14 word 3 times each Reading: Read and log your minutes at www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/minutes * Students brought home a blue Reading Pledge for the Book Fair. Our school goal is to read 100,000 minutes betweeen 2/9/12 - 2/15/12. Please have your child sign and return their pledge. The pledge has the website where you can go to register your child and log their reading hours. The web site is www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/minutes. Our school goal breaks down to 280 minutes per student which would be 40 minutes per day for each student. This can be 40 minutes of reading anything; books, magazines, studying for a test, ect. Today the children are bringing home a bookmark where they can log their reading minutes each day. Please have your child keep the book marks in the Home Folder so that they will have it both at school and at home. We will log any reading time that we do at school onto the bookmarks. They logged 15 minutes for reading today. Some days they may get their whole 40 minutes at school. --------------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming Events: February 6 - 10 - Valentine hearts will be sold for $1 for one or $3 for five. Next we will change gears and start learing about money and time. The children usually do pretty well with money, but time tends to be a very difficult concept for second grade. It is very abstract to them which makes it more difficult for them to grasp. Second graders tend to like things that are concrete. If your child is struggling, just hang in there and keep practicing (with an analog clock). Please remember that we are only introducing some of these time skills in second grade. They will revisit them again for several school years to come. If you have an analog clock at home, you may want to start practicing with your child. We will be working on telling time to 5 minutes, such as 1:25. If you do not have an analog clock, you can find small moveable clocks at the dollar store to help your child practice. They are usually in the toy section. There is also a link on my schoolnotes page called timemonsters.com that has many games and activities to help with the concept of time. Science and Social Studies: In February we will be studying Black History Month. We will learn about some of the contributions of some famous Americans. Some of the Americans that we will be celebrating during Black History Month include Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. --------------------------------------------------------------- Lesson 13 Spelling words: slice, dodge, city, huge, nice, space, gem, price, cage, fudge Lesson 13 challenge words: central, fireplace, gentle, gymnast, celebrate Lesson 13 red words: change, courage, once Lesson 13 robust vocabulary words: wilting, flitted, swirling, trance, route, semblance, distraught, improvise Lesson 13 high frequency words: wear, tough, woman, young, shoes, wash, above Lesson 14 Spelling words: fur, shirt, burn, stir, bird, turn, herd, third, learn, search Lesson 14 Challenge words: perfect, birthday, purple, circus, surprise Lesson 14 Red words: were, mother, father Lesson 14 High Frequency words: care, father, interesting, sweat, thumb, touch Lesson 14 Robust Vocabulary words: dappled, entranced, trooped, circling, adorable, assortment, habitat, immense --------------------------------------------------------------- Our Specials: Monday - Library (8:10-8:55) Tuesday - Computer (10:30-11:15)and Spanish (11:15-11:45) Wednesday - Art (1:50-2:35) Thursday - Gym (10:30-11:15) Friday - Music (1:50-2:35) --------------------------------------------------------------- Dates for Sacraments at St. Margaret Mary: February 7, Tuesday - Mandatory Parent Meeting for the sacrament of Reconciliation at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria February 25, Saturday - Retreat for sacrament of Reconciliation from 2:00-4:30 PM in the cafeteria March 2, Friday - Sacrament of Reconciliation at 6:00 PM in the church or during the school day (children will be bussed to the church).
