We had another exciting meeting with Larry Bell. Here are a few things that other schools are doing. You might also want to incorporate these ideas into your classroom. * Each grade level research which words are giving students a hard time and come up with your own list of 12 words. * Use the 12 words in your essential questions and objectives. * Using iphoto and comic life, create a comic page with students in various stages of the twelve words. For example the word is "TRACE" 2-3 pics of student outlining different things. The definition; a sentence and student generated question. * Use UNRAAVEL with a released test item on the activeboard. Students go to the board and practice underlining title; numbering paragraphs etc. * Some schools are doing a mock test every Friday. Shorter than benchmark then working up to longer passages. * Creating games such as concentration and I Have/Who Has to be put into centers. Many such games are in the 12 words book. * Gradually lengthen all assessments weekly so that at least at the end they are testing at least for an hour. 25% of your last major test should be added to the next test. * He suggests that if a student finishes early; they should put both hands on the top of the desk and stare straight ahead. Larry's main message is to present the information in a positive way and create an environment where our students feel safe and can be successful. |
