Mrs. London's Math Class! Important Items: 1. Work folders dates for the third quarter will be sent three times as they were during the second quarter. As always, when folders come home please review your child's behavior sheet for points lost and look over the graded work. Please sign the point sheet and return all graded work. Student work will be kept in classroom portfolios during the year. 2. Tutoring: We are still available every Wednesday from 2:30-3:15 for students to stay and receive extra help on any subject or to have access to research materials or computers for upcoming projects. If your child chooses to take advantage of this time, transportation MUST be provided at 3:15. 3. During the second semester Intramurals will be returning to SEMS. We will begin on February 9th. The students are very excited about this. Ask your child about their activities. 4. The Mentoring Program has begun. Please ask your child about his/her mentor and the activities that are being done at the meetings. This gives your child another adult to bond with and see with any concerns they may have. Grading Scale: Grades cannot be determined by doing an average. Each category of assgnment carries its own weight. Projects: 35% Tests: 30% Quizzes: 20% Classwork/Homework: 15% Current Topics: Mr. Williams, our student teacher, has begun working with blocks 1, 2, and 3. He will add block 4 during the week of February 15th. For at least twenty school days, he will teach all classes before gradually releasing them. We are currently reviewing metric measurement as well as working with customary measurement. The use of proportions will be important as we make conversions between the two forms of measurement. Ask your child about the Olympic events that they participated in! Following measurement, there will be a several week study of probability. At that time we will do numerous experiments and learn how to tell the difference between experimental and theoretical probability. *The topics currently being covered in class can be found in the textbook. Students have been given a math textbook of their own to use this year. It will serve as a resource for them to review class material. Doing the problems in the book and checking the answers in the back is a great way to review for quizzes and/or tests. There is also a web site on the cover which will allow you access to additional practice problems for review online.
