The AVID Elective
AVID students are enrolled in their school's toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, but also in the AVID elective. For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking, probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
Colleges and Universities will be sending flyers and information to the class and the students are sharing that information.
Students will explore the essays required at colleges and are completing an essay requested at Tufts University last year.
University of Connecticut Tutors will be available for the AVID students Monday and Wednesday during the AVID class. Students are required to write questions for the tutors and to summarize the tutorial sessions.
Each evening students will complete the Learning Log for the day.
Thursdays will be speech day and students will either give an extemporaneous speech or will participate in a Philosophical Chair discussion.

The study of various careers is important in the AVID program. Students will begin a career assessment soon and spend time investigating career choices.
