The End is Near....

Hey everyone! Can you see it? The end is near. What an amazing year we have had, but we are not done yet. This is the most important time for review and end of the year testing. Please make sure you continue to read each night with your child, and work on the math homework together. I know a lot of us are getting burnt out since it is the end of the year, but let's finish up strong!

Report Card Reminders:
Report Cards will be sent home on February the 8th
* You are free to set up a conference after receiving report card. Just write a note in the agenda and we can meet.
* Grades this quarter have gone down. Remember last quarter was mostly a review of 1st grade material. Please do not be surprised if your child's grades have dropped.
* All grades that were entered into grade book have been sent home in Thursday Folders. You should make sure to look each Thursday to see how your child is doing. The reason we do this is so that you can keep up and know when your child might be struggling.
*Spelling homework is now being taken for a grade. I was just using it as practice but since a majority are not doing both assignments, they will be graded.
*Reading logs count for extra credit on the lowest grade in reading. On the reading log each quarter you will see a number. If every week is completed you will get 5 points added to your lowest grade. The points go down the more you do not do it. We only had 3 students get all 5 points! This could be the difference between a D and a C or an A and a B!
* Many are still struggling with Math Facts. Your child will not be able to move forward in Math if they do not know their basic math facts (6+7, 5+4, 11-6). Please work on re-grouping and borrowing also!
* If your child is struggling they will get a note sent home about possible retention. Please take notice.
* County wide, teachers are required to assess DRA (reading levels) in Fall, Winter, and Spring. I am constantly assessing students in reading rotations each week. It may not be DRA (since it is done independantly) but they are reading on their level working on strategies. I know when your child will be ready to move on. Some of the DRA levels on the report card will not be going up. This may mean your child was not able to move up, or I may not have assessed them at this time. Again, we are still in "winter" so your child will be assessed by the end of February.
*DRAs can take 45 minutes per student. I would rather assess when I know they are ready, then to waste precious class time and reading instruction that could advance them. If you have a question please come to me and I will better explain all procedures .
*Remember my job is to help your students while they are in my care at school. Please take the time to continue this at home. Also know that I am here for you! Email me, or jot down a note in the agenda and I will be happy to schedule a time to meet.

It seems like the Month of January has been a roller coaster, between snow days, workshops, and me being sick. First let me thank those for your well wishes. I am pretty much a guinea pig at this point. They believe the pain I have been experiencing is my gall bladder, but before they will put surgery as an option I have to go through a series of test. I have completed 2 of the 3 and the third will be Thursday, February 3rd. This is the most invasive so continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers.
This being said I will be out a few more days. Let me tell you upfront that when I am out I always look for the best subs. Last week I made sure to get a certified teacher to be in the room to insure your child was learning everything according to schedule. Also Mrs. James, and Mr. "B" constantly make sure your child is staying on task, and continuing with the normal schedule. Please know that although I am not there your child is learning, not just doing busy work.
I can't wait to get all of this sickness taken care of, and be back in action. We are already half way to the end of the year!
