Beta Club Information for New Members

Background Information: The National Junior Beta Club is leadership-service organization that encourages effort, promotes character, and stimulates achievement among its members.  To be a member of the club is an extreme honor because a student has demonstrated that he/she has a strong commitment to school and learning.  A member must maintain a 3.5 Grade Point Average (honor roll for the entire school year) and complete twenty hours of community service with a minimum of ten of those hours completed with school-related activities. All hours may be school-related if the student chooses. The club meets once a month to discuss service projects and community involvement.

Obtaining Service Hours: The Beta Club has been involved in numerous events to help the community and Dodgen.  Some of those activities include: Beta Buddies, an after-school tutoring program; Book Drive, where the students collected new and gently used books; Teacher Helpers, where students volunteered time and energy to help Dodgen teachers; Shamrocks Against Dystrophy, where students raised money to help fight muscular dystrophy; and Relay for Life, where students sold candy grams, luminaries, and other items in order to help raise money for Dodgen's Relay for Life team.

If you accept the invitation to join, please fill out the required information on the membership form. Forms will be available at the meeting on May 4 or you may download one here.

Then, you need to pay $17 for membership dues. Make checks payable to Dodgen. Money and membership form should be placed in a Dodgen money envelope and placed in the black box by Friday, May 18. We strictly adhere to this deadline.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact the sponsors, Kim Kellett and LaTease Drawdy.

Please note: If you are already a member of the club, you will not receive a new invitation.

Ms. Kellett

Note from Mrs. Olson

:

If you wish to be involved in Ryder's "Carve Out Cancer" 5K Race and Festival at Dodgen on Sat., Oct. 8, you can register for the race and read more information about the festival at this link:   http://www.active.com/donate/ryder5K

The beneficiary of this race is the Rally Foundation (www.rallyfoundation.org)  which was started as a response to 8th grade teacher, Nancy Olson's, quest to improve how under-funded childhood cancer research is after her son, and former Dodgen student, Will Olson, was being treated for a relapse of his brain and spinal tumors. Unfortunately, Will  is currently being treated for a second relapse.  During the week of Oct. 3-7, Dodgen's Awareness Club is collecting donations for the national fundraiser
4 Quarters 4 Research,  which is a Rally fundraiser that was started in honor (and unfortunately now in memory) of Pope senior football player, Matt Hobby, who battled cancer in his junior and senior year at Pope.  All donations are welcome--cash, check or change!

Thank you for your generosity!

Beta Opportunity

Message From Archana Patel, East Side festival co-chair

Students please email Mrs. Patel, if you are interested in helping with the festival.

Hi, my name is Archana Patel and I am the co-chair for East Side's fall festival and I am looking for Beta Club student volunteers to help us at the festival. We do provide a signed certificate of hours worked. We have in previous years gotten volunteers from Dodgen Beta Club. The students are wonderful, so very helpful and many are East Side alumni (which we love, but it is not a requirement).

The Rodeo Under the Stars festival is on Friday, October 15th from 6pm - 9pm. Volunteers can work 1 - 2 hour shifts and will be paired with a buddy and an adult. Some of the stations we would need assistance with are: bake sale, pumpkin painting, assisting at the teacher table and food service (not handling hot food, just stocking sodas, juices, fruit and chips).

Dodgen family and friends:  CARVE OUT CANCER, a Fun Run/5K and festival will be held at Dodgen on Sat., Oct. 9.  Entry forms are attached.  This event is a fundraiser for www.RallyFoundation.org which was created when a former Dodgen student and son of 8th grade teacher, Nancy Olson, relapsed with a brain tumor.  Rally has awarded over a million dollars in its first four years just for childhood cancer research!  Of every dollar raised, 93 cents is given to research cures for childhood cancers!  At Dodgen, there will be a DJ, apple bobbing, face painting, costume contest, trophies for race winners and costume winners and more.  When you sign up on line or at school, you can choose Team Ryder or Team Logan to show your support for two Dodgen families whose kids are battling childhood cancer.  Come join the fun, show your support for Logan and/or Ryder, and please share this info!

The Junior Beta Club

Dodgen Middle School

Background Information: The National Junior Beta Club is leadership-service organization that encourages effort, promotes character, and stimulates achievement among its members.  To be a member of the club is an extreme honor because a student has demonstrated that he/she has a strong commitment to school and learning.  A member must maintain a 3.5 Grade Point Average (honor roll for the entire school year) and complete twenty hours of community service with a minimum of ten of those hours completed with school-related activities. The club meets once a month to discuss service projects and community involvement.

Interested New Members Meeting: You have received an invitation to join the Beta Club. Please attend an informational meeting on Thursday, May 6 at 8:15 a.m. We will meet in the Covered Play Area. At this meeting, you will learn more information about the club, including how to obtain service hours, as well as receive a membership registration form. The one-time cost to join Beta Club is $17.00 (make checks payable to Dodgen). This covers local and national dues, official membership certificate, and pin. If you cannot attend the meeting, you do not have to notify the sponsors; just visit Mrs. Drawdy’s or Ms. Kellett’s blog to obtain the registration form. Money and registration form are due by May 19 (the form and money must be placed in the Dodgen Money envelope).

If you have questions, please contact LaTease Drawdy (latease.drawdy@cobbk12.org ) or Kim Kellett (kim.kellett@cobbk12.org ).

Beta Club Agenda

April 22, 2010

Officer Applications-7th grade students interested in running for office, please pick up an application after the meeting. Typically, you meet one day prior to the regular meeting to discuss service projects and other agenda items. Really, there is no distinction in the offices. All work together cooperatively. You do earn school hours for serving as an officer.

Relay for Life- Although we are not attending the event this year, we encourage you to raise money for Relay for Life. Ask your family members, friends, neighbors, etcetera for donations. For every $10 you raise, you receive one hour of school-related services. Donations may be cash or check; if a check, make payable to the American Cancer Society. All donations are tax deductible.

May Meeting- The May meeting will be held at 8:15 on Thursday, May 13. Location will be announced later. You will need to bring your service hour sheet at that time. Make sure that you have totaled up the number of hours. We will be giving awards for the most hours.

Thank you Beta members for helping with our various fundraisers and philanthropies. Please check your schedule before making a commitment to help with Beta activities. Keep in mind, once you volunteer, organizers will be expecting your assistance.

Beta agenda

February 25, 2010

Shamrocks:

Please sell shamrocks to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Green shamrocks cost $1.00 and the gold ones are $5.00. For every $10.00 you sell, you will receive an hour of service. You may get a bag of shamrocks to sell at the conclusion of the meeting. If you need more, see Ms. Kellett or Mrs. Drawdy. Sale ends March 16th.

Tutoring:

We have only 5 more tutoring sessions. We have increased the number of hours to 2 hours per session from next Tuesday until the Tuesday before spring break. Eighth graders really need to attend. Those students who come to tutoring really like to have a student with whom to work (not one of the sponsors).

Service Hours:

Remember that your 20 hours must be completed by the last week of school. A minimum of 10 hours must be school-related. We will be honoring the student with the most service hours and giving out awards to others who have obtained a lot of hours.

MUST MONDAY will change beginning February 1, 2010!  We will now accept canned and other non-perishable goods EVERYDAY!  Students can donate throughout the month.

Beta Members: 10 cans = 1 service hour

Tutoring—we desperately need more tutors, especially 8th graders. Tutoring is on Tuesday afternoons until 5:00. If we have too many tutors, teachers are always looking for helpers. We will continue tutoring until Spring Break.

Dodgen Fund Raiser Request:

Dear Dodgen Families,

The recent disaster in Haiti has left destruction and human suffering.  As you can see from the various news reports, the needs are enormous.

The Dodgen staff is initiating a fundraiser in support of the American Red Cross’s relief effort in Haiti.  If you would like to participate, please send your tax deductible donation to Dodgen by Friday, January 29, 2010. If you would like to send a check, please make it payable to Dodgen Middle School and write Haitian relief fund in the “for” line at the bottom of your check.

The Dodgen Vision statement says, “All children will receive the respect, encouragement and opportunities they need to build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be successful, contributing members of a global society.” This unfortunate natural disaster is a teachable moment. Our students will feel the satisfaction that comes with reaching out to others who are in need, and they will have the opportunity to learn what it means to be a contributing member of a global society. In addition, they will learn how fortunate we are to live in the United States and the responsibility that we have to help our neighbor in need. We will be taking collections during homeroom through January 29th.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

 The Dodgen Staff
