Mrs. Lindsey's Second Grade Language Arts Class Notes ***Updated 5/24/12. Dear Students and Parents, ***May homework menu and work is due TOMORROW. Reading logs are due May 31st. The reading celebration is June 1st. ***TODAY a 3 story "cold read-no support" test was sent home for your child to correct and for you to sign on Thursday 24th and return on TOMORROW, Friday, May 25th. Credit will be given for the returned signed/corrected test. This is a great way for you to see your child's reading stamina. Can your child read a book for an hour and answer questions without any kind of interruption, signs of being tired, etc? This is what we are working toward now and throughout the summer for August (beginning of 3rd grade). ***The END of YEAR PARTY cost is $5 for the party day lunch and drinks and snacks for the last week of school. The money is due Friday June 1st so we can place the order and purchase drinks and snacks over the weekend. The party is on 6/6. ***Beginning this week, Monday, May 21st, students may give their oral book reports. (See homework menu.) ***The last page on my entries on the schoolnotes list (where comprehension questions and writing requirements is located) is a new page titled Language Arts Activities. There are some great summer fun ideas and I will add to the page. Math, science, and social studies are included. ***Papers will go home on Friday, May 25th. Ask your child what book he/she will be using for the oral book report. (No writing) Have your child practice by telling it to you. Include title, author, illustrator, retelling with characters, setting, problem, solution and opinion of the book. If a poetry book was chosen the title/author, the kinds of poems (see Table of Contents) should be shared and the student may fluently read with expression 1-3 poems. Then the meaning of the poems should be explained. All students should be prepared to answer questions from the students and me. I am looking forward to this experience! In language the students have studied the statement (.), question (?), command (.), and exclamatory (!) sentences. They should begin their sentences with a capital letter; I, names of people, places, days of week, months of year, holidays, and titles all need capital letters in their writing. We will also continue to work on using correct grammar and word usage. Check out www.duvalschools.org/sheffield/sheffieldstudents.htm This is fantastic!!! It's full of resources and web site for kids...and adults for learning and fun. Here is a web site for you to see a book title list of leveled books. If you google DRA level book titles you will find more. Level 18= J, Level 20= K, Level 24= L and Level 28= M. A good estimate is one level per 9 weeks. In August to start 3rd grade Level M or N is recommended. This web site has a list of book titles for all levels including fiction and non-fiction. Please have your child read both types. http://wces.ucps.k12.nc.us/php/DRA_list.htm (There' an _ underscore between the DRA_list.) Thank you for working with your child and checking their planner and homework every day.
