Kindergarten Kapers

We are getting ready to end the second quarter of the school year.  It is hard to believe the school year is half over.  It seems like so long ago when you were getting your child ready to come to kindergarten.

Please remember to practice letter sounds regularly with your child to make sure they have a concrete knowledge of each letter sound.  As the third quarter begins your child should be using the letter sounds they know and be able to put them to practice in sounding out the letters for the words they see.  For example, if your child is reading and comes to the word - bus, your child should be able to use letter sounds to figure out the word.  They should be able to say the sound for each letter as in   b = /b/    u = /u/      s = /s/ and blend the sounds to figure out the word.  This is a skill that takes a lot of practice; however, if your child has been doing this skill or starts this skill now, they will be well on their way to becoming a good reader.
