February 6, 2012:

3R03, 3R02:  Read the article attached below called "Food Laws."  Summarize the article in 8-10 sentences.  Respond to the following in another 8-10 sentence paragraph:  Do you think the federal government should regulate what students mut be served at school?  What about food related laws such as the requirement for all New York restaurants to display calories?  Use examples and be specifice. This is due by the end of the class period for a quiz grade.  It will not be accepted if it is not on my desk or in my e-mail by the end of the period.   Also, read and summarize the rest of Macbeth Act 3, scenes 4-6. Each summary must be 3-5 sentences. Vocab. books and Macbeth for tomorrow.

Anatomy:  Read through and begin working on the worksheet attached below called "Forensic Analysis."  Anything you do not finish we will work on tomorrow. Quiz on cranial and facial bones tomorrow.

Why might it be true that individuals who have faced personal weakness, failure, or challenges might make better leaders.  Do you think what Erskine says about a weak man knowing the value of strength and compassion is true?  Why or why not?

3R03:Mid-term review is attached at the bottom.  Complete the vocabulary definitions for Wednesday.  We will be working on analogies on Wednesday, so you are responsible for reviewing the literature.  Also be sure to bring your quiz over the Canterbury Tales and we will correct them together.

3R03: Answer the questions of the preface and introduction.  Read the attached article on Stalin to answer the last questions. Due at the end of the class period.   Read and annotate Chapter 1 of Animal Farm.  

1.  Explain why Orwell did not like the communism of Russia  and the romanticized Western view of the Russian Revolution.

2.  According to the preface, why was Orwell so disliked as a politician and philosopher? (x)

3. Why does the author of the preface suggest that Orwell and his contemporaries were ultimately wrong about how easily totalitarian dictators would be able to control the world? (xiii-xiv)  

4.  According to the introduction, discuss why Orwell’s book seems to defy classification as a fairy tale but why, in fact, it is one. (xx-xxiii)

5.  Why was Lenin critical of Stalin as a General Secretary? What personal defects did Lenin see in Stalin?

6.  Describe the Stalin Revolution and the Great Purges.  What did each accomplish for Stalin?

7.  Discuss Stalin’s involvement in World War II.
