News and Notes Mrs. Orlando K-4 April 23, 2009 Dear Kindergarten Families, This week we began our Earth and Space Unit! We learned that our planet is named Earth, and that it is made of land, air, and water. Then, we created a model of the earth that included all 3 of its parts. We also identified and researched animals that inhabit the land, air, and water in order to create a mural. In addition, we defined the word continent and identified the 7 continents and discovered information about them. In celebration of Earth Day we watched The Lorax by Dr, Seuss and identified ways to care for the Earth. In ILA this week we read My Teacher Can Teach Anyone! By W, Nikola-Lisa, and Bravo, Maurice! by Rebecca Bond. Our Comprehension Skills this week were identifying the main idea and answering questions. In Phonics, we continued to practice building words. Our word building focused on the phonograms (word families) –et and –eg. Our Phonemic Awareness Skill this week was segmenting words. Our High Frequency words were she and good. Our Robust Vocabulary words were appreciate, grace, host, lush, marvelous, and constantly. Our writing focus for the week was writing stories. We continue to work to meet our individual writing goals to help us monitor our own progress. Ask your child to tell you about their writing goal! In math, we counted by 2’s and 5’s. We also counted by 2’s using a calculator, and made 3 dimensional shapes from toothpicks and marshmallows. This week has been a busy week in room K-4! Enjoy Spring Break!

News and Notes Mrs. Orlando K-4 April 2, 2009 Dear Kindergarten Families, This week we brought our Construction unit to a close by finishing up our Homes Around the World projects. Also, we had a fantastic time exploring all the Home Shelter projects built by our K stars. We ended the unit by watching the movie Building a House to see how a house is built from the foundation up. In ILA this week explored nonfiction text. We examined how authors use charts and maps to help us understand information. We also identified the main idea in nonfiction text and explored nonfiction books that identify the similarities and differences of a topic. Finally, we explored who might use different types of nonfiction texts. Our writing focus for the week was writing descriptions of places. This week we evaluated our individual writing goals and set new ones to help us monitor our own progress. Ask your child to tell you about their writing goal! In math, we counted by 2’s and5’s.
