Dear Kindergarten Families,
In the past 2 weeks we have kicked off our Fall unit this by defining scientist. As scientists, we have observed, described, and drawn unique items. We also worked to draw diagrams and make models of trees. We furthered out study of trees by identifying deciduous and evergreen trees, and observing their features.
In ILA, last week, we focused on non-fiction. We read National Geographic: Young Explorers Magazine and found bold print, print that was a different color, and different size print. We discovered that authors often make important words look different to help us realize that they are key words in the text. We also discovered that non – fiction authors use number steps to share directions. We followed directions to make a turkey.
This week we reread Bee-Bim Bop! by Linda Sue Park, Up, Up, Up! It’s Apple Picking Time! by Jody Fickes Shapiro, Bear’s Busy Family by Stella Blackstone and New Shoes for Silvia by Johanna Hurwitz.. Our Comprehension Skill was making predictions. We also worked on identifying characters, setting, and the beginning, middle, and end in the stories we read. In Phonics, we wrote and listened for the letter Aa. We also worked to blend and build words. Our Phonemic Awareness Skill this week was alliteration (i.e. words that all have the same beginning sound like - Lazy Lions lick lollipops). We reviewed all taught sight words and robust vocabulary words this week.
In math, we continued to identify teen numbers, and make sets of teen numbers. We worked to solve math mysteries. In addition, we explored symmetry and created art projects that demonstrate symmetry. We also practiced counting by 10’s to 100!
Wow – it has been a busy week in room K-4!

Field Trip Info
Dear Parents,
The first week of December, Kindergarten will take a field trip to the Baltimore Museum of Industry, which is located in downtown
We will leave school promptly at 9:15 a.m. and return at approximately 2 p.m. The cost of the trip is $10.00 per child and includes a reenactment of life in a market place, and the opportunity to build part of a town. Students must bring a bag lunch on the day of the trip. Permission slips and payment are due by Friday, November 21, 2008. Checks may be made out to YBES.
We can take 2 chaperones per class, and will be chosen through a lottery system. Chaperones are free of charge, and may ride the bus. Chaperones will be responsible for assisting during our field trip activities, so siblings may not attend. If you are interested in chaperoning, please check off the appropriate space and you will be notified if you are selected.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Lattanzi in the primary office. We are looking forward to an enriching and informative field trip!
Sincerely,
Kindergarten Teachers
