Monday, May 21 READ TO THE VERY BOTTOM PLEASE. Please remember that the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL is AUGUST 2---a THURSDAY! Based on the mean score on unit math tests and performance on the final exam, I have recommended 31 students to take ALGEBRA for high school credit next year. It is best if I have parent sign-off on this decision and I sent home permission letters today with those 31 kids. Parents---if you prefer to have your child take PRE-ALGEBRA instead of Algebra, just check the appropriate line on the permission note and send it back.
New information about the PTSA and AVMS! Hi Everyone, Thank you for all of you who attending our organizational meeting. We had a great meeting today. We are officially a PTSA. Our local PTA is named Alice Vail Middle School PTSA. The meeting started at 4:14 and ended at 5:15. There were 13 parents and 3 teachers at the meeting. Jackie Chavez and I went to McDonald’s after the meeting and finished all the paperwork. It will be filed tomorrow (Saturday) at the AZ PTA board meeting in Phoenix. We made copies of all the paperwork for our permanent file. AZ PTA paid for all the copies. We agreed that a planning meeting would be set for Thursday, June 7th at 6:00 pm in the office conference room. THIS HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED BY MR. VINYARD YET. I will let you know when the date and time is approved. Regular meetings will be on the 1st Thursday of every month from 6:00-7:00 pm in the library except in August. August’s meeting will be on Aug. 9th. The meeting during the fall break will also be rescheduled. The 6:00-7:00 pm time slot was chosen because parents felt they can get home and feed the kids, attend the meeting and still be home after the meeting to check on homework. Before school and after school did not work for many parents. The elected officers are Mary Palacio-Hum, President, Paty Hanzlick, Treasurer and Danielle Martinez, Secretary. There was no Vice President nominated. If anyone would like to be the Vice President, please let me know. I passed around a paper for everyone to fill out and tell us what their biggest concern or what they would like to see at the school. Almost everyone wrote “monitors on campus” or “monitoring campus to protect students”. It appears that parents feel Alice Vail has no monitors or not enough monitoring. I did not address any of the issues and we can discuss then at the planning meeting when Mr. Vinyard can address the concern. Summer transition, improving communication and improving current rating of “D” were also on the list. Setting up a Facebook account was also on the list. We also learned that there are many fundraisers already in place by the different clubs, teams and band/orchestra. It would be good to know what all the different fundraisers are so we don’t compete with what has been in place or repeat the same fundraiser. That’s a quick recap of what happened in additional to all the formality of making motions to form and approve the bylaws and standing rules. Annual dues will be $5.00 for individuals and $25.00 for business/community members. Thanks again for your interest. I have 30 people on my email contact list so far. I hope all of you decide to become a member and also include your family, kids, neighbors, grandparents and extended family. Joining the PTSA does NOT obligate you to attend meeting and/or volunteers although we welcome your participation. Your membership is showing support for Alice Vail Middle School PTSA. Thanks again and I’ll send the confirmation on our June planning meeting later. Mary Palacio-Hum Alice Vail Middle School PTSA President
I need 3 more student math texts! Next week we will be painting rocks to use in the science patio forever. And we will be gathering items for our 8th grade time capsule. Kids need a good sized smooth rock. WE have enough bottles.
