    GPS is a free college access initiative that empowers AFRICAN-AMERICAN HIGH

    The Common Application is sharing the 2017-2018 Common Application essay prompts
    to help students get ahead of the game. Rising seniors should begin writing their essays

*  Free Official SAT Practice Online Resources (1/18/17)
    Once students connect their College Board and agree to send their PSAT 
    results to Khan Academy accounts at satpractice.org, students will receive
    an SAT practice plan created just for them. 
*  Virtual Virginia Students (1/9/17)
    Virtual Virginia does not follow Accomack County's school cancellations.
    Students are expected to continue working at home on days school is
    cancelled. It is very important to stay up to date with class work. Please
    communicate your needs to your online teacher or to Mrs. Strautz

*  SAT Score Choice (11/29/16)
   Students can use Score Choice to select and send their best SAT scores to colleges.
   Students can also convert old SAT scores to new ones (and vice versa) in accordance
   with each college's score-use policy.  Log in to Collegeboard and go to My SAT Scores.
*  Fair Opportunity Project's College Application Guide (9/22/16)
    This is a free college admissions and financial aide guide written by college
     students, college advisors, and high school counselors. This guide can be
     downloaded directly from the website, fairopportunityproject.com or
     download the guide from the "Files" tab on this page.
*  Virginia Education Wizard (9/22/16)
    The Virginia Education Wizard allows students to determine their educational
    path and link it to their unique skills, interests, and values. Students will find
    Career Assessments, Paying for College and preparing for college information,
    lifestyle budgeting games, and workforce roles which allows students to
    determine their skill levels, link to occupations of interest, and prepare for the

*  Office of Admission Outreach Office at the University of Virginia (9/19/16)
    The mission of this office is to welcome students from underrepresented groups to
    UVA, help students compete successfully in the admission process, and give students
    general advice about finding a college that will help them reach their potential and
    achieve their dreams.  UVA accepts students solely on their academic merit, regardless
    of their ability to pay, UVA covers 100% of demonstrated financial need. This means
    UVA covers the full amount that families are unable to pay, through scholarships, grants,
    work study and low interest loans.  UVA limits student debt. UVA limits loans to an
    average of $4,500 per year for in-state students. Low-income in-state students receive

*  Higher Admission (4/22/16)

    Higher Admission is a site where high school juniors and seniors

    spend about fifteen minutes entering their basic information;

    GPA, test scores, expected family contribution (optional), and a

    copy of an application essay they've written.  When ready, they

    click a button and make their profiles available--anonymously--to   

    colleges and universities.  Colleges and universities search Higher

    Admission for students they'd like to enroll and send them detailed

    invitations that include estimated merit aid and a link for quickly

    determining the net cost of attendance. Higher Admission colleges

    and universities only invite students whom they will accept upon

    receipt of an application.  The web address is

*  Parents of Virtual Virginia On-line Students (9/22/16)

    Parents who have a student taking Virtual Virginia On-line classes and

    want to have access to their grades, parents can contact the guidance

    counselor to send out account credentials to them.  First, the counselor

    must have the Parent Acknowledgement form where parent checked for

    permission to communicate with Virtual Virginia.  Contact Mrs. Strautz to

    get connected at 336-6166.

PTSA Scholarship Eligibility Alert (8/29/16)

    IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE CHS PTSA $500, SENIORS

    MUST BE A PTSA MEMBER BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 2014.

4 or More (12/13/16)

    Part of CollegeBoard, 4 or More is a national movement to encourage all students

    - but primarily low-income college ready students - to apply to at least four

    colleges.  Research shows that the more college applications a student submits,

    the higher the likelihood that student will enroll in a four year institution. 

    Students who use a fee waiver to register for the SAT and others chosen using

    U.S. Census data, will receive the Apply to 4 or More packets. Each packet will

    include a personalized letter with college planning facts and guidance, college

    application timeline, and 4 college application fee waivers.  Students should send

    the fee waiver forms only to institutions included in the SAT Fee Waiver Directory

    of Colleges (found at collegeboard.com).  Students receiving the Realize Your

    College Potential Fee-Waiver Program packets will receive 8 application fee waivers

    and information on other traditional sources of fee waivers so they will not be

    limited in their college choices.  For more information about the Realize Your College

Students Who Qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch (10/31/16)

    All students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch NEED to complete the

    Free/Reduced Lunch application form whether they eat the school lunch food

    or bring their lunch to school.  Students who are eligible to receive

    Free/Reduced Lunch also are eligible for fee waivers for SAT tests, ACT tests,

    and college registration fees.

 

SENIORS:  A reminder that when you send in your college applications,

    you request College Board to send your SAT and ACT scores to those

    colleges.  If you have had those scores sent to the colleges when you

    took the SAT and/or ACT, call the college admissions office to verify

    they have received those scores.  The first four scores from Collegeboard

    are free, thereafter you will have to pay to send them.  If you have taken

    any AP courses you will need to request Collegeboard to send your AP

    scores to the colleges.  The same goes for dual enrollment classes, you

    will need to request the community college that you took the college class

    from to send a transcript to the colleges you are applying.  There are fax

    requests in the guidance office for ESCC.

*  Need help with homework?  Particularly in the Math and Science Fields?

    Have your student go to The Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org),

    a not-for-profit website with the mission of providing a world-class
 
    education to anyone. This video-library is the most used educational
 
    video resource.  This site contains mini-tutorial videos that go over

    specific problems or concepts.  It's like getting tutoring from home to

    help your students do homework when they have forgotten how to

    do it.  If you have any questions, please call the guidance office.

     If you wish to participate in NCAA Division I or II athletics in college,

     you must be certified by NCAA. Please go to the following

     www.eligibilitycenter.com  then click on Prospective Student-

     Athletes start the process.  Request the guidance office to send

     an official transcript to  NCAA Eligibility Center; P.O. Box 7136;

     Indianapolis, IN 46207. When you register for the SAT or ACT,

     make sure you select code 9999 (the Eligibility Center code) as

Register online at www.collegeboard.com or pick up a registration packet in the 

guidance office. The SAT Reasoning test fee is $51 and each subject test is

$74.50.  Students should take the SAT Reasoning test first. Fee waivers are

available to those students who qualify.  Go to http://ineedapencil.com for a

free program that helps prepare students improve their SAT scores.  What's

next?  SAT Skills Insight at sat.org/practice shows students the types of

skills demonstrated within a particular score band for the SAT and also helps

them gather suggestions for improvement.  My SAT Online Score Report

CURRENT SCHOLARSHIPS AND NOMINATIONS 

  

*  James N. Belote III Farm Bureau Agricultural Scholarship (4/4/17

For graduating seniors in Accomack County planning careers in agriculture or

an agriculturally related field. Requirements include a not more than 200 word

essay, and a letter of recommendation. The scholarship award is $500 for the

first year, renewable annually at $500 per year for a total of $2000 for a four

year college. For a two year college the total will be $1000. The application is

located in the guidance office and the deadline is April 30.

*  Wallops Island Chief Petty Officers Association  (4/11/17)

    This scholarship is to assist students with college costs. Eligibility requirements

    are: be a graduating senior with a 3.0 or higher, demonstrate contributions to the

    community, and be accepted at an accredited institution. Three letters of

    recommendation, a personal statement, list of accomplishments, and career and

    educational goals are requested.  The application is located in the guidance office

    and the application deadline is April 28.

*  Exmore Moose Lodge #683 Robert L. Parker Jr. Memorial   (4/7/17)

    This $500 scholarship will be given to a deserving high school senior.  The

    recipient will be chosen by the lodge on scholastic ability, leadership abilities

    and not necessarily on critical financial need. The application is located on the

    "Files" tab on this webpage. The application deadline is May 5, 2017.

*  The Sharone White Bailey Educational Scholarships   (4/7/17)

    Sponsored by the Macedonia AME Church, two scholarships in the amount of

    $2000 each ($1000 per semester) will be awarded to students enrolled in college

    for the 2017/2018 term.  Applicants must be either an Accomack or Northampton

    County public high school graduating senior. One "Community" scholarship will be

    awarded and one scholarship will be awarded to a member of Macedonia AME

    Church. Eligibility requirements include: Be accepted as a full-time student in the

    fall term of 2017; Have a grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 grading

    scale. Supply an official high school transcript; Submit a one page essay; Provide

    documentation that you are an active participant in extra-curricula activities in

    school, church, and/or the community; And submit 2 signed and dated letters of

    reference from the list below: pastor, mentor, employer, teacher or school

    administrator. The applications are located in the guidance office and the

    application deadline is May 15.

*  Eastern Shore Christian Businessmen's Association  (4/3/17)

    The Eastern Shore Christian Businessmen's Association $1000 scholarships are

    awarded annually to each of two graduating seniors of the Eastern Shore of

    Virginia. Requirements include: a completed application form, letters of

    recommendation, official transcript, a typed response to an essay topic, and a

    one page resume outlining extra-curricular activities, church-related activities,

    community service and other achievement.s The application is located on the

    "Files" tab on this webpage.  The application deadline is April 30.

*  The Kammie Olsen Shannon Memorial Athletic Scholarship  (4/3/17)

    The Kammie Olsen Shannon Memorial Athletic Scholarship has been established in

    the memory of Kammie Olsen Shannon, a 1986 graduate of Chincoteague High 

    School, who left her heart on the court/field whether it was playing basketball,

    volleyball, or softball. That same heart, full of love and life beat for the last time 

    on March 23, 2017. Her love for the game was contagious and we know she would 

    want her legacy to live on through the athletes at Chincoteague High School. This

    $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a Chincoteague High School FEMALE graduate,

    who participated in two or more sports in each of their sophomore, junior, and

    senior years and who plans on continuing their education in college or a vocational 

    program.  The application is located in the guidance office and the application

    deadline is May 5, 2017.

*  Mary N. Smith Alumni Scholarship (3/30/17)

    The Mary N. Smith Alumni association if offering a scholarship in the amount of

    $500 to an Accomack County graduating senior. The application is located on the

    "Files" tab on this webpage. The applicant is required to write a one-page essay

    (typed) that explains their goals and how you intend to contribute to the Eastern

    Shore.  The application deadline is May 5, 2017.

*  John and Florence Parsons Scholarship (3/30/17)

    This scholarship is in the amount of $500 and the application is located on the

    "Files" tab on this webpage. The applicant is required to type a one-page essay

    that explains their career goals and your plans to improve and contribute to  

    society.  The application deadline is May 5.

*  CHS PASSS (3/29/17)

    This organization will award 2 $500 scholarships for graduating seniors. This

    scholarship will use the local scholarship application located in the "Files" tab

    on this webpage.  The applicant must have two letters of recommendation and

    write a 200 word essay on "What the importance of the After Prom Event

    means to them personally".  The application deadline is May 1. 

 

*  2017 Young Professionals Scholarship (3/28/17)

    The Young Professionals of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce are offering

    one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from the Eastern Shore  who will be

    furthering their education at a college/university/technical trade school beginning

    in the fall.  A description of the applicant's plans after high school and a short essay

    are required. This application is located in the "Files" tab located on this webpage.

    The application deadline is May 3.

*  PTSA Scholarship (3/27/17)

   Seniors who have been members of the CHS PTSA for at least 3 years (September 2014)

   are eligible for this $500 scholarship. Two applicants will be awarded this scholarship.

   This scholarship uses the local scholarship application located on the "Files" tab. A copy

   of the PTSA membership card must be included with the application along with two letters

   of recommendation. The application deadline is May 1.

*  Eastern Shore of Virginia National Society DAR Scholarship 

     This organization wishes to award a $1000 scholarship to a 2017 graduating Accomack

    County high school male or female senior who is planning to attend college.  The main

    interest of this student should be in American History or in Political Science. A "B"

    average throughout the senior year as well as recommendations. A 500-800 word essay

    is required. The application is located in the guidance office and the application

    deadline to the guidance office is Tuesday, April 26.  The guidance office will

    send the applications to the chairman. The recipient of this scholarship needs

    to be available the evening of Wednesday, May 10 to attend the DAR meeting

    where he or she will red the winning essay and be given the $1000 check.

*  Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Dept. Fred Tolbert Memorial/Special (3/27/17)

    The fire department will offer two $500 scholarships to a graduating CHS senior. The

    scholarship is open to both boys and girls who are entering a vocational/occupational

    school, college or community college starting in the fall. The student must include an

    essay entitled "How I feel that the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company benefits the

    community". The essay must be a minimum of 125 words. This scholarship uses the

    application deadline is May 1.

*  Masonic Lodge (3/27/17)

    The Masonic Lodge will be offering their $1000 scholarship to a graduating

    senior.  The local scholarship application located on the "Files" tab will be

    used.  The application deadline is May 1. 

 *  The Chincoteague Police Department (3/27/17)

      The Chincoteague Police Department is offering a $1000 scholarship to a CHS graduate.

    The local scholarship application located on the "Files" tab on this webpage is used.

*  The Moton Family Challenge Scholarship (3/27/17)

    This scholarship will award two $2500 merit-based, renewable scholarships to

    college-bound high school seniors who are direct lineal descendants of students

    affected by the public school closings in Prince Edward County, Virginia between

    1959 and 1964.  Applicants need not currently reside in Prince Edward County to

    be eligible for the scholarship. Students can visit www.motonmuseum.org/scholarship 

    to apply.

*  Hallie M. Smith Scholarship (3/27/17)

   The Hallie Smith scholarship is awarded to a high school senior  who has

   been accepted to an accredited college. The recipient will receive $500 each

   of the four years they remain in good academic standing at their school.

*  Hampton Inn & Suites Edward A. Robbins Memorial (3/27/17)

    The Hampton Inn & Suites is offering a $1000 scholarship to CHS graduates.

* The Diane Galambos Memorial (3/27/17)

    This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior based on character,

   goals, and leadership.  To be eligible for this scholarship a student must:

   submit a copy of your letter of acceptance from a college; submit a unofficial

   high school transcript; intend to major in education, nursing, or animal

   veterinary science; and write a 300-500 typewritten word essay entitled, "I am

   pursuing a degre in (related to one of the fields stated above), and my career

   goals are... This scholarship uses the local scholarship application located in the

   "Files" tab on this webpage. The application deadline is May 1.

  •  The Kiwanis Club of Chincoteague (3/27/17)

    The Kiwanis are offering the following scholarships using the local scholarship

    application in the "Files" tab on this webpage. The application deadlines are

    May 1.

    Savage and Mears:  Offering 2 $500 scholarships to graduates who will attend

    either a nursing school or the Eastern Shore Community College.

    Cliff Raymond:  This $500 scholarship will award a senior who has attended CHS

     for at least 3 years. An essay describing what Chincoteague High School means to

    the applying senior.

    The Kiwanis Club of Chincoteague:  The Club will offer 5 $500 scholarships to

    seniors who have been accepted to a technical trade school or college. Community

    service as well as academics will be considered.

    The Gary Mason Teenager of the Year:  The Club will be considering seniors'

    community service to award the $1500 scholarship.

    The Floyd and Patty Mason Memorial:  This is a $1500 scholarship will be

    awarded to a graduating senior who will be attending a Virginia college, Salisbury

    University, or University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

    The Ron Halbert Memorial:  This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior

    majoring in music.

*  Christ United Methodist Women of Chincoteague (3/27/17)

    This scholarship is for graduating senior girl who is continuing their education

    at a 2 year or 4 year college. The applicant should have above average grades,

    has worked hard in the community and school. The award will be sent directly

    sent to the student's college of attendance once proof of registration has been

    received. This scholarship uses the local scholarship application located on the

    "Files" tab on this webpage. The application deadline is May 1.

*  Christ United Methodist Church (3/27/17)

    this scholarship uses the local scholarship application located on the "Files" tab

    on this webpage. The recipient will be selected based on financial need, scholastic

    achievement, as well as extra curricular activities and community service will be

    the primary considerations. This scholarship uses the local scholarship application

    located in the "Files" tab on this webpage. The application deadline is May 1.

*  John Shields Tarr Memorial (3/27/17)

    This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating male who has been

    accepted to a technical trade school or college. A high school transcript and

    no less than two letters of recommendation must be included with the local

    scholarship application located in the "Files" tab on this webpage. The 

    application deadline is May 1.

*  Mary "Sparky" McIntosh Memorial (3/27/17)

    This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating female who has been

    accepted to a technical trade school or college. A high school transcript and

    no less than two letters of recommendation must be included with the local

    scholarship application located in the "Files" tab on this webpage. The 

    application deadline is May 1.

*  Hortatio Alger National Career & Technical Scholarship Program (3/24/17)

   Receive up to $2500 to purse career or technical education. To be eligible for

   the Horatio Alger National Career & Technical Scholarship Program, applicants

   must fulfill the following criteria:  have completed high school (or earned GED)

   by Spring 2017; be enrolled in a career or technical degree/certificate granting

   program in Fall 2017 that will lead to employment; demonstrate financial need;

   applicants must be Pell Grant eligible; be under the age of 30; be a United

   States citizen. To apply online, visit application.horatioalger.org. The

   application deadline is June 15, 2017. For additional information regarding

*  Jonathan Nolz Memorial Scholarship  (3/17/17)

    This $1500 scholarship, in memory of Jonathon P. Nolz, will be awarded to a

    graduating senior based on Christian character, goals, and financial need. To

    be eligible, a student must be a graduating senior, submit a copy of your letter

    of acceptance from a technical school or college, submit an unofficial copy of

    your high school transcript, write a 300-500 typewritten word essay entitled,

    "What It Means to Me to Be a Christian, and How This Influences My Goals."

*  Knights of Columbus Msgr. Mickle Council 14263  (3/16/17)

    The Knights of Columbus of Cape Charles are offering a $1000 scholarship

    award to a graduating senior whose family is registered in any Catholic

    Church on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The applicant must have received

    the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church. A 300 word minimum

    essay is required on the topic: "My Catholic Faith: How It Will Guide My Life".

*  Addie Sawyer Scholarship (3/10/17)

    To be eligible for this scholarship you must be a high school senior who is

    related to a member (a parent, grandparent,sibling, aunt, or uncle) of

    Accomack Chapter #62, Order of the Eastern Star. The applications are

*  American Legion Post #159 (3/10/17)

    This is a local scholarship using the local scholarship application located on

    the "Files" tab on this webpage.  The American Legion Post #159 is offering

    three scholarships in the amount of $500 each. Students may submit an

    essay on "What does patriotism mean to me?" to be used in case of a tie.

    One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Chincoteague High School graduating

 *  ESTACI Young Leaders Scholarship Awards (3/8/17)

    Sponsored by the Eastern Shore Training and Consulting, Inc., these awards will

    be selected from graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic success in

    their chosen field of study, despite challenges of racism, sexism, and/or poverty.

    ESTACI is seeking those student leaders for whom post-secondary education might

    otherwise be financially unattainable, and who may be overlooked by traditional

    scholarship awards due to socio-economic challenges which may have prevented

    them from participating in traditional extracurricular activities on campus.  The

*  ACES Scholarship (3/8/17)

    The Arts Council of the Eastern Shore are proud to offer graduating seniors of the

    Eastern Shore who plan to pursue a career in the arts (performing arts, visual

    arts or arts education). The scholarship award for the purpose of defraying

    college tuition, room and board, and textbook expenses. Requirements include

    two letters of reference, an official transcript, a 300 word composition, and

    provide a letter of acceptance from the college. Go to www.acesva.org and click

*  The Justice Family Scholarships (3/7/17)

    Justice Family Scholarships are four-year college scholarships provided by the

    Justice-Frye Foundation, Inc. for selected graduates of Chincoteague High School

    who reside within 1.5 miles from the intersection of Horntown and Fleming roads

    in Horntown, Virginia, and who received their K-12 education in the Accomack

    County public schools serving this specific area of the county. These scholarships

    can be used to attend any state-supported public college or university in Virginia.

    Among applicant criteria, applicants must have recieved all years of their k-12

    education in Accomack County, Virginia, public schools serving the designated

    resident area, and graduate from Chincoteague High School. The application can

    to the guidance office is May 1.

*  Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce "Nicki L. West Memorial" (3/7/17)

    One scholarship will be awarded to an eligible Chincoteague High School student

    who has been accepted by an accredited school or college. Selection of the student

    will be made on the basis of character, scholarship, citizenship, leadership, ability,

    and need. The scholarship will be paid in consecutive annual installments of $500 at

    the beginning of each fall semester up to a $2000 over 4 years.  This scholarship uses

    the local scholarship application (located in the files tab on this webpage) plus a

    supplemental application also located on the files tab.  The application deadline 

    has been changed to May 1.

*  Eunice Fisher Morris Scholarship  (3/2/17)

    This scholarship is to provide a minimum of $250 and a maximum of

    $500 in financial assistance to graduating seniors attending an accredited

    college in the 2017-2018 school year. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or

    higher, submit SAT scores, submit a one page typed essay, supply an

    official high school transcript, provide documentation of extra curricula

    activities in school and in the community, and submit two letters of

    reference. The applications are located in the guidance office and the

    application deadline is May 1, 2017.

*  W. Foster Fletcher Conservation Scholarship (2/28/2017)

    William H. Beasley, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

    Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to two graduating seniors who

    will major in a related curriculum to natural resource conservation and

    environmental science.  The application deadline is April 14, 2017.

  •  Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association (2/20/17)

    To provide financial aid to undergraduate students in the fields of

    study such as Marine Biology, Environmental Engineering and

    Management, and Fisheries Management, or other curricula related

    to the ecology of the coastal waters of the mid-Atlantic seaboard

    and the Chesapeake Bay and its Tributaries. Scholarships range

    from $1000 to $2500. Applications are located in the guidance

  •  757 Queens SC INC. (2/20/17)

    The purpose of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity to a

    student who plans to attend a college or post-secondary education.

    Graduating seniors must be in good standing with their high school.

*  Financial Literacy Ambassador Award (2/17/17)

    This is a $10,000 award that will be distributed to five students

    ($2000 each) who earn a perfect score of 100% on the Financial

    Literacy Certification test in the 12016-2017 school year and are

    selected based on their application. The application form is located

*  The Armenian Education Center/Scholarship (2/15/17)

    This $1000 scholarship essay contest is open to high school students

    grades 9-12. Hard copy essays must be postmarked no later than

    April 7, 2017. Essays must also be emailed by April 7th. Information

*   VA Sheriffs' Institute Scholarship Program  (2/8/17)

    The VA Sheriffs' Institute Scholarship Program is now open to receive

    applications from seniors who will be attending college in the fall majoring in

    the area of criminal justice. Only students attending a Virginia college will be

    considered. The application is located in the guidance office or online at

    vasheriffsinstitute.org and the application deadline to the Accomack 

    County Sheriff's Office is April 7, 2017.

*  Daryl and Drew Campbell Memorial Scholarship (2/7/17)

    These awards, in the amount of $500 and 2, $250, sponsored by the Troy

    Donovan Ashe Memorial Pistol Tournament Committee, will be awarded to

    a graduating senior enrolled at a college in the fall.  This application is

    located in the guidance office and the application deadline is April 25, 2017.

*  Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Iota State Lambda Chapter (2/3/17)

    The Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is offering four

    grants-in-aid to FEMALE high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in the

    field of education. Requirements include an unofficial transcript, two letters of

    recommendation from professional educators who have been the student's instructors

    with the writer's original signature, a typed statement explaining your reasons for

    applying for the grant and your goals as a future educator, and a list of school activities,

    community activities, and honors/awards received. The application can be downloaded

    April 15, 2017 for submitting the application.

*  Betty Ross Academy for Lifetime Learning Scholarships (2/3/17)

    A $1000 scholarship to help graduating seniors continue their education at a

    college/university majoring in one of the STEMM fields: science, technology,

    engineering, mathematics, or medicine.  Applicants must declare an intended

    field of study and submit grade transcripts, lists of academic and extra-curricular

    activities, reference letters and essays as well as a letter of acceptance from a

    community college or university.  Applications can be found at their website,

  •  Justin P. Stone Scholarship (1/27/17)

    This $1000 scholarship uses the CHS Local Scholarship Application located in the

    "Files" tab on this webpage. One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior

    who has been accepted to a trade school or college. The selection of the student

    will be based on character, citizenship, leadership, ability, and need. General attitude

    and potential may also be considered. Applications for this scholarship must be

    submitted to the Town Manager of the Town of Chincoteague between April 1

    and April 28. A high school transcript must be included with the application.

     *  Honors Grad U Scholarship (1/18/17)

     This is an educational blog dedicated to providing teachers with resources to

     help students graduate and go to college. They offer an annual scholarship

      available to college-bound high school seniors and college students with at

     least one year left of school. Through art, music, photography, creative

     writing, or video, students can use their prompt to create and share their work

    This club is awarding three $1000 scholarships to a FEMALE graduating high

    in the state of Virginia or the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

*  Women's Club of Accomack Co GFWC Tidewater District Fannie Stearns (1/5/17)

    This club is sponsoring a student for the Tidewater District GFWC Fannie Stearns

    Scholarship. This $500 scholarship is awarded to a student residing in Accomack

    or Northampton counties.  The scholarship is to be used to further educational

    training in a college in the state of Virginia. Applicants who have been granted

    this scholarship may apply annually for a maximum scholarship award of $2000.

*   Gettysburg's STEM Scholarship Program (12/12/16)

    With help from a generous grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF),

    Gettysburg is offering a STEM scholarship program for students interested in

    STEM fields (Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer

    Science, Mathematics, and Physics).  STEM scholars will have their full

    demonstrated financial need met for all four years with no loans, and have the

    opportunity to:  Attend a STEM-focused pre-orientation workshop with other

    STEM scholars; Enroll in an exclusive First-Year Seminar taught by STEM

    faculty; Participate in bi-monthly luncheons with STEM faculty and a variety

    of learning activities on and off campus; and Take advantage of various STEM

    offerings, including faculty-student research, peer-mentoring, preferential

    residence in Gettysburg College's Science House, and internship opportunities

    with industrial partners.  The deadline for Regular Decision (using the Common

   The BigSun Organization is offering to help young athletes succeed in their

   academic pursuits by offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. 

   All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they

   are participating in.  The student's participation may be in any capacity,

   whether as a player, coach, or official. The successful applicant will be a high

   school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved

   in some sport at the school or in the community. The scholarship award is

    The TBA will award five students $5000 scholarships. Students of ANY Major may

    apply for this scholarship. Applicants must include an official transcript with SAT

    scores, two or more recommendations made by teachers, counselors, and/or

    community service providers, a full resume, and a written description of why you

    are deserving of a TBA scholarship. Applicants must attach page one of each of

    their parents' or guardians' 2015 or 2016 Federal Income Tax Returns, attach

*  Virginia Tech VALHEN Hispanic College Institute   (4/13/17)
    The VALHEN Hispanic College Institute at Virginia Tech is a free, 4 day
    residence program on campus, meals included, and transportation provided.
    This program prepares Hispanic students in the state of Virginia to enter and
    succeed in higher education. Students will meet with successful Hispanic
    leaders who will help inform students about career and educational
    opportunities. Students will receive help writing a college application essay;
    participate in STEM-related workshops sponsored by NASA; understand the
    financial aid and the FAFSA application processes; acquire knowledge on how to
    search for available scholarships and other types of financial aid; compete for
    available scholarships; and participate in a College, Career and Community

*  Boys State Conference   (4/10/17)
    Sponsored by the American Legion Post #159, this conference is scheduled
    for June 18-24 at Radford University. The American Legion Post #159 will

*  Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program  (4/10/17)
    Sponsored by the American Legion Post #159, this program provides students with
    the opportunity to experience firsthand what it takes to become a law enforcement 
    officer.  Held at the Virginia State Police Academy in Richmond, it provides an ideal
    setting for rising high school seniors  to learn about law enforcement.  The five day
    session includes instruction and orientation to criminal investigation, patrol
    techniques, accident investigation, firearms safety, use of radar and VASCAR, and
    marksmanship. The opportunity to visit the Governor's Mansion, the Virginia War
     Memorial, and have lunch at a local Post is provided. The session will be held in July
    and the application deadline is April 30.

    JMU Honors Institute: A week long program for high school juniors and seniors get
    a first hand look at a university and its honors program. June 18-24, 2017
    Robotics Camp:  A challenging program designed for middle school students who want
    to push robots to the limits with two JMU Physics professors. June 19-23, 2017
     Fencing Camp:  Provides instruction in footwork, techniques, strategies, and safety
    used in Olympic style fencing for rising 5th - 10th graders at the beginning through

*  William & Mary Pre-College Summer Program in Early American History (3/31/17) 

    The National Institute of American History and Democracy at the College of William

    and Mary is sponsoring this program to students who will be high school juniors or

    seniors next year, as well as those who will graduate from high school this spring.

    Pre-collegiate students will earn 4 hours of college credit for a summer course in

    which they study American history "on site" at many historic places, museums, and

    archaeology sites throughout Virginia. Students may select either of the following

    courses:  History 217: Jamestown through the American Revolution or History 218:

    The American Revolution through the Civil War. The application deadline is April 30.

*  US Youth Conservation Corps (3/30/17)

    This is a summer youth employment program that engages teenagers in meaningful

    work experiences on national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and fish hatcheries.

    YCC members work on projects that promote awareness and appreciation of the

    public lands legacy and the nation's natural, cultural, and historic resources.

    Applicants must be 15 yrs. old before completion of the program, a US citizen, able to

    obtain a work permit if needed, provide a valid social security card number, and be

    able to fulfill the functions of the assigned work. Projects may range up to 10 weeks

    and up to 8 hours a day. YCC members are paid the federal minimum wage, or the

    state minimum wage if higher. Applications are in the guidance office.

*  Virginia Space Flight Academy (3/27/17)

    An exciting opportunity for students interested in the sciences and technology

    fields to receive a fully paid week this summer at Virginia Space Flight

    Academy's summer adventure space camp program. All they need to do is

    write an essay and submit it for review.  The specifics are:  The contest is open

    to all students' ages 11-15 years old in the Accomack County Schools.  Students

    must be no younger than 11 and no older than 15 during the summer of 2017.  

    To apply, students must write a 500-1000 word essay on the subject below.

    Essays will be judged on creativity, content, and grammar/organization.  The

    essay question for the academy is: "If you are selected for the crew of the first

    mission to Mars, and must set up a working base on Mars, what one thing would

    you insist on bringing with you and  why?" Essays must be submitted to

    Ms. Tamara Sterling, Director of Secondary Schools no later than April 14, 2017

    @ noon. Winners announced May 5, 2017. The week at camp is subject to

    availability. Essays should be turned into the guidance office no later than

    Wednesday, April 12. All essays will be forwarded to Ms. Sterling.

*  Mindfulness Training for Teens (3/27/17)

     This is a 6-day residential retreat for students ages 15-19 in Madison, VA on

    June 30-July 5.  Students will learn mindfulness through guided sitting and

    walking meditation, movement, small group discussions, and fun workshops.

    Students will develop valuable skills that can support emotional resilience,

    inner strength, and compassion towards self and others.  Students will

    practice the skills to become a better leader, team member, and learner.

    Students will study with experienced teachers, mentors, and peers in a

    supportive environment. This retreat is sponsored by the Inward Bound

  •  Virginia Robotics and Cyber Academy (3/8/17)

     This is a 5 day summer program for high school students with disabilities

     that will be held in Richmond at the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the

     Blind and Vision Impaired (VRCBVI). Rising sophomores through seniors

     are eligible. Out of town students will room Sunday through Thursday nights

     in the dormitories at VRCBVI.  The camp is scheduled for June 26-30.

  •  Gettysburg College Summer Academic Camps (2/24/17)

    This camp is available for high school juniors and sophomores and subjects

    creativity and easy-to-learn Arduino to create projects with sensors, motors,

    speakers and displays, to create projects that interact with them and their world),

    The summer Bridge STEM program is a week-long residential experience

    for rising sophomore, junior, and senior high school girls interested in

    will be rising juniors, rising seniors, and graduating seniors by this summer.

    Students can earn four hours of college credit for an in-depth study in early

    American history. Two three-week sessions will be offered. Applications may

    be downloaded from www.wm.edu/niahd.  The application deadline is

    April 21, 2017.

  * Holiday Lake Forestry Camp (2/20/17)

    This camp is for students who  are 13-16 years of age with an interest in

    forestry or other natural resources.  This camp is a residential camp with

    a structured academic focus. Campers enjoy outdoor field experiences on

    the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest.  The program centers on classes

    such as forest management, wildlife and environmental protection,

    supplemented by special presentations from natural resource professionals.

    Daily quizzes and a final exam are included. Exploratory classes of the

    camper's choice, sports, a lumberjack competition and some free time and

    swimming each day. The cost of the camp is $85 for the week. See the

*  Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists (BLUR) (2/7/17)

    Sponsored by Sweet Briar College is providing a three week program of

    creative writing, studio art and sound design from June 18 through July 9. 

     BLUR is an accelerated summer program for high school students (rising

    10th, 11th, and 12th) which encourages the blending and transcending of

    artistic genres. Artistic tracks include creative writing, painting, drawing

    sculpting, sound design and composition. Students will receive two hours of

    college credit. Financial aid and scholarships available. The application

*  Duke University Summer Session (12/16/16)

    Duke is now accepting applications for grades 9-12 to enroll in programs

    for either academic credit or personal enrichment courses with a global
