WHAT ARE MATHFACTS? The basic addition mathfacts consist of all possible combinations of 2one-digit numbers added together. Examples: 3+2=5, 6+5=11,
7+9=16. The highest possible combination is9+9=18. The corresponding
subtraction facts arethe reversals of the addition facts. Example: 12-5=7 and
12-7=5 are thesubtraction reversals of 7+5=12 and 5+7=12. These reversals
are called a “numberfamily.” Your children have been exposedto these and
learning them since kindergarten or firstgrade. AT THIS POINT, THESE
FACTS SHOULD BECOMMITTED TO ABSOLUTE MEMORY! Pleasehelp
your child to achievethis goal, or to maintain it. Memorization of these facts
is an essentialstepping zone toward becoming a competent math student.
How can you help yourchild with this?......... oral drills, use of flash cards, various
Practice drills/gamesavailable via computer, writing facts……………….. anything
that you can think ofto help your child reinforce the memorization of these facts.

FAMOUS AMERICAN BOOK REPORT/WAX MUSEUM
Part 1
A. Select a famous American. The biography subject must have died before the year you were born. ALL STUDENTS MUST DO A DIFFERENT AMERICAN, so…select a couple of books on different people, in case your first choice is taken. Select your book and show it to Mrs. Charles for approval by Wednesday, February 10th, at the latest.
B. Read the book. (Use “sticky notes” to mark parts you want to remember.)
C. Gather information on the attached Data Collection Sheet .
D. Write a rough draft of your report. Follow in the same order as the information on the Data Collection Sheet. Use cursive or manuscript. Put all information in your own words.
E. Edit your rough draft. This is how to edit it:
· Check to see that you’ve included all of the information requested on the Data Collection Sheet. · Read your draft out loud to see if it makes sense. · Make sure all sentences are complete thoughts, start with capital letters, and end with ending marks. · Underline words you think might be misspelled. Check your spelling with an adult or a dictionary and correct if necessary.
F. Write the final draft of your report on 3 ring binder paper. Use your neatest cursive handwriting. Hand in both the rough and the final drafts and the Date Collection Sheet. Staple all together with your name on the top.
(see back)
WAX MUSEUM
What is a “wax museum”? It is a museum of life-like statues of people, usually of famous people. In our 3rd grade wax museum you will pretend to be a statue that comes to life and speaks for one to two minutes, but no longer than two minutes. You need to impersonate the person from your biography. You cannot use notes. This must be memorized.
What should I say? Identify yourself by name. (Example: I am George Washington, and I was the first President of the
How should I act? Start out stiff (frozen) like a statue but then come alive and start speaking. Speak with expression! Gestures are very effective. After you finish your lines, become stiff like a statue again. Be sure to practice this at home.
What should I look like? You need a costume (full or partial) to make you look like your character. Consider using props to give the idea of your character.
When do I present this? This will be presented on Wednesday morning, March 3rd, during the Library period.
Special feature: Mrs. Stoiber will videotape our statues coming alive!

Merry Christmas!
Hello 3rd and 4th grade families!
The 4th and 3rd grades are teaming up this year to spread a little holiday joy to the children living at Carpenter’s Shelter. This is the shelter the Blessed Sacrament School supports in the mini walk for the homeless. We are hoping you can help us out with this wonderful project! This is the plan:
· Each 4th grader will receive a 3rd grade partner · The team of two will get the name and age of one child living at the shelter this Christmas. · Between now and December 14th the 3rd and 4th graders should work to EARN $5.00 at home to buy small gifts for the child they were given. (please help them to think of ways to earn this money on their own) · Monday December 14 and Tuesday December 15 the kids will decorate a gift bag for the child they were given · Monday December 14 all of the unwrapped gifts should be sent to school (no sooner or later please) and we will have a “stocking stuffing party”! · The gifts will be delivered to the shelter by the teachers on Tuesday December 15.

Community Service We have started reading on Mondays to preschool students in the Rainbow and Shooting Stars’ classes. The third graders are enthusiastic about this, as are their little listeners! I have requested that students bring in a book that they enjoy and which would be appropriate for 4 and 5 year olds listeners. The third grade readers should be able to read their book out loud in 5-6 minutes. Thank you for the very good response in sending in books. Please send in a book or two, if you have not already done so. Eight students per week read.
Share-a-Book This is a program where parents come into the classroom to share a favorite book with the children. We hope to start this in December. Further details will be sent soon.
Please let me know by note or phone message if you notice that your child is having difficulty with a particular concept. Either Mrs. Stoiber or I can assist your child to strengthen that particular concept. Again, please let me know if there are any situations that may impact your child at school, e.g., family illness, a move, parent travel, pet problem, etc. You may call me at school or at home until 9:30pm (703-836-6736), or email me at mcharles@blessedsacramentcc.org. FICTION BOOK REPORT GUIDELINES – 3RD GRADE
This book report involves reading a chapter book, writing about it, designing a book cover, and making a brief oral report. I am enclosing paper for the written report. More paper is available, of course. (Just ask!)
WRITTEN REPORT: The required information is shown on the back side of this sheet. Please use it as a checklist and a worksheet. Especially note under Summary the suggested length of the summary portion. STUDENTS MUST HANDWRITE THEIR OWN REPORTS. First write a draft copy. Correct it for spelling, complete sentences, and to see if it makes sense, and then write the neat, final copy. – Submit both to Mrs. Charles.
Please do not select books that have evolved from media or toys (e.g. Star Wars, Pokemon, Barbie, etc.) Please do not select a Captain Underpants book. Please choose a book that you have not read before.
BOOK COVER: Pretend that you’ve been hired to illustrate the book cover. Make it beautiful, scary, dramatic, or funny. Make it creative and colorful. Remember to put the title, the author, and your name as the illustrator. A BORDERED PIECE OF COMPUTER PAPER IS ATTACHED TO USE FOR THE COVER. Please do not use any computer generated graphics or lettering.
ORAL PRESENTATION: Include the following information: title, author, setting, characters and problem. Tell one event (maybe a scary or funny part), but do not give away the book’s ending! Speak only 1-2 minutes. Tell why you did or did not like the book. Write ONLY KEY WORDS on the index cards. DO NOT REWRITE YOUR BOOK REPORT ON THE INDEX CARDS.

Homework will be recorded daily on http://new.schoolnotes.com. If you have not already done so, please log on to the website and register to receive daily updates. In addition to daily homework, we will post quarterly objectives, long range projects, and timely teacher messages. The children should continue to use the assignment book as their primary homework reference and to develop/maintain skills in non-electronic record keeping. Parents, please look at this assignment book daily and sign it.
Community Service Each week small groups of third graders read to the Shooting Stars and Rainbow preschool classes (4 and 5 year olds). This is a special treat for both the preschoolers and for the third graders, who are truly “big guys” to the preschoolers. I ask the third graders to bring their favorite books to share. Parents, please help your children select books that they can COMFORTABLY READ out loud in about 5-7 minutes. Practicing reading the book at home is a good idea. After each student has taken his turn reading, we start the cycle again. If you don’t have such books, please drop me a note and I will ask Mrs. Knight to help your child select an appropriate book from the school library. This will start within the next couple of weeks (more info to follow).
Field trips – Planning phase; probably none this quarter
How to contact the teacher You may write to me in the assignment book or send me a separate note. I try to read these early each day. You may call the office and leave a message, or call me at home in the evening before 9:30 – 703-836-6736. You may also email me at my school email address: mcharles@blessedsacramentcc.org, or respond through the Schoolnotes website. I will check email before 8 am and after school.
If you notice that your child is having difficulty with a particular concept, please inform me right away so that we can remediate this situation in the classroom. I have the full time help of a wonderful assistant, Mrs.

Dear parents,
Welcome back to school, Moms and Dads. I enjoyed meeting many of you at last Thursday’s open house and then met a few others in the dismissal line yesterday. Here is some information that pertains to third grade.
Special Classes - PE meets on Monday and Thursday. Foreign language meets on Tuesday and Thursday. Art and Computer meet on Tuesday. Library and Music meet on Wednesday. These classes started today.
Food/eating - 1) Snack: Children are welcome to bring their own snacks. The brown paper lunch bag (marked with name) is the preferred way to package snack. Today I encouraged the children to reuse these bags! There will be a time to eat snack in the morning and in the afternoon. This will often be a “working snack,” so please keep it simple. 2) Milk service begins next Tuesday. 3) Lunch time is 11:40 until 12:05. (A 25 minute recess period starts right after lunch.) 4) Allergy alert: Because of a peanut allergy in the class, lunches containing nuts should be placed in the box outside the classroom door and snacks should be peanut-free. 5) Birthday treats are optional. If you wish to send one, please double-check with me beforehand. Simple, easy to serve treats are best. Please do not include a drink with the birthday treat. 6) Water bottles may be brought to school.
Health/general Because of our heightened concern this year about the flu, we will stress the importance of hygiene to keep us as healthy as possible – particularly proper washing of hands. The 3rd grade desks will be wiped down daily by an adult.
Homework will generally be assigned Monday through Thursday. This week’s homework will be light. Please check the assignment book page each night and sign or initial in the “Message” box. Important: We use a website to post daily homework assignments, long term assignments, quarterly objectives, and pertinent messages. Please go to newschoolnotes.com and register to receive this information.
Covering books - Please cover the soft back books with contact paper (preferably clear), and the hard back books (reading and math) with a cover of your choice. (Please do not use the contact paper on hard back books and do not apply tape to the book itself.) I will advise the children to bring a couple of books home per night throughout this week for covering. We have some BSS red and white paper covers, appropriate for the hardbacks. Please advise if you would like these. It’s fine to use the fabric “book socks” on the hardbacks but be sure that it fits properly. All books should be covered by next Tuesday, September 8th. If you need more time, please just drop me a note.
“My Story” photo board - Each student will have a week in which to display a selection of his/her photographs. The pictures are displayed in the order in which they are delivered to me. We enjoy seeing everything from baby to current pictures. So bring those pictures (anytime!) so we can keep up this favorite 3rd grade activity.
“My Life in a Brown Bag” - Each student brought home a brown lunch bag yesterday. This is a fun, “get to know each other” assignment. The children place items in the bag which tell something about themselves. Each student shares the contents of his/her bag by telling what each item represents to them. Due date: tomorrow, 9/2. We will share these throughout this week.
I am very pleased to be your child’s teacher this year and look forward to working together with you. If there is anything that might impact your child in the classroom, big or small, please let me know by note or email. My school email is mcharles@blessedsacramentcc.org. I’ll look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on September 17th.
With best regards,
