West Rowan Middle School Uniform Policy
2009-2010


The school uniform policy is designed to provide students with the safest and most orderly learning environment possible. The school uniform will be worn every day, all day. This includes field trips, after school events, and extra-curricular activities. Events to which uniforms will not be required will be specifically announced. There are additional dress code items in place in the Student Code of Conduct.

Uniform Bottom Wear
Color choices: Solid Khaki (light tan) or Solid Navy Blue
Young men may wear slacks and shorts
Young ladies may wear slacks, capris, shorts, jumpers, skirts and skorts

Clothing items worn at the waistline
Young ladies’ shorts and skirts must be finger tip length both back and front
No Sag and Drag/ All items must be hemmed-without frayed edges.
No denim, knit, sweat pants, or writing on pants
No leggings under shirts/skirts
Socks should be a solid uniform color or white
No head coverings
No pants tucked into boots or socks


Uniform Shirts
Colors: 8th grade- Light Blue; 7th grade- Navy Blue; 6th grade- Red
Types of shirts: Plain (no logo) Oxford shirt appropriately sized, plain (no logo) Polo shirt appropriately sized with buttons, Short sleeved and long sleeved are permitted
Length of shirt: No longer than finger tip length; not short enough to show skin when hands are raised
The only logo permitted on shirts is West Rowan Middle School

Undershirts
Colors: Solid White, Light Gray, or the color of uniform shirt
Types of undershirts: Crewneck or Turtleneck with no logo; short sleeved and long sleeved are permitted
Undershirts must be tucked in

Outerwear
Sweatshirts, worn correctly, are the only type of outerwear allowed in the classrooms
Coats, jackets, purses, drawstring bags are not allowed in the classrooms, they must be placed in the locker immediately upon arrival at school, they are not allowed in classrooms or trailers
Types of Sweatshirts: crewneck not hooded or zippered
Colors: White, Gray, Navy or your Grade Level Color
Uniform shirt collar must be worn outside the sweatshirt
The only logo permitted on shirts is West Rowan Middle School

Shoes
Types: Enclosed shoes- not open toe and not open back, boots with low heels (no higher than 2 in.)
Shoes/boots with strings must be tied securely-all eyelets or hooks must be secured
Socks should be a solid uniform color, or white,  and not a distraction

Jewelry
Necklaces and other neckwear must be worn inside the shirt
Jewelry must not pose a distraction or a safety issue

Hardship
Upon request, West Rowan Middle School will assist parents/guardians in obtaining appropriate uniforms for students

Noncompliance
Students who choose not to comply with the uniform policy will receive a written warning for their first violation. Second violation will be a day of ISS. Third violation and subsequent will dealt with according to the discretion of the administration.
Students are expected to be in uniform the first day of school. Exceptions: Students coming into West Rowan Middle School from another school will be given a 3-day grace period.

Special Events and Rights of Expression
Students will be allowed to participate in religious expressions to the extent that they currently are allowed to do so under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Special events may be observed periodically and will be specifically announced. *The administration reserves the right to address any other concern that might present itself as a distraction to students during classroom instruction.
