Lesson Updates:

Reminder!!!! Turn in ALL assignments to the IN box on the date due (usually the next day).  Late assignments will loose 10 points each day.

1-25-2010

Discussion: Welcome to Physical Science.  Today we will go over the syllabus, rules, procedures, grading, supplies, a class overview, and safety.

Sign and return:  syllabus checklist and safety contract

Sign into class internet resources:  new.schoolnotes.com and nrhs.edu20.org

Assessment:  Safety situations sheet.  Turn in tomorrow for your first homework grade.

1-27-2010

Discussion: What is scientific notation? Why do we use it and how do we use it? We will then discuss SI units (the system of international units). What are they and what prefixes can we use to distinguish the magnitude of the values? I will present the information and model basic conversions between units and their base unit.

Assessment: Scientific notation and SI unit conversion Practice

1-28-2010

Discussion:  Introduce the 6 step method to dimensional analysis to do unit conversion.  Go over any questions from homework.

Assessment:  correct homework

1-29-2010

Discussion:  Use SI basic units to derive other units such as volume, area, and density.  Derive and practice with these units and do 2 step conversions with these derived units.

Assessment:  Density word problems worksheet

2-4-2010

Discussion:  Review any questions from homework and introduce temperature conversions.

Assessment:  Temperature conversion practice problems.

2-5-2010

Quiz on chapter 1

Discussion:  What is the scientific method and how can we use it to solve nearly any problem?  Once we master the concept of the method we will continue our discussion of density and how it is a derived unit.  How could we use a graph of mass and volume to determine density.

Activity:  In 1983 the government changed how they made pennies it is your job to determine which metal they used.  Use the scientific method to develop an experiment to determine the density of pennies then compare your density to a density chart of known metals.

Assessment:  Complete your data table, graph and analysis of data, and answer conclusion questions.

**many were absent today-you need to arrange to make up the quiz and lab, you have the number of days you were absent plus one to make up

2-8-2010

Chapter 1 test covering Competency Goal 1: The learner will develop abilities necessary to do and understand scientific inquiry.

2-9,10-2010

Discussion:  History of atomic theory covering Dalton, Ruthoford, Thomson, and Bohr

Activity:  Partners will OWN a section/topic and create a simple one take movie to teach the rest of the class the essentials of their topic.
(reflection on activity FYA day one was rough getting started but I am very pleased with day 2 you all really got into it and covered a lot of information...know when everyone is successful on the test for your section that YOU did a great job teaching it)

2-11-2010

Discussion:  Atomic Structure!  Discuss the parts of an atom and how to calculate the number of subatomic particles.  Learn to draw atoms that are neutral, ions, and isotopes.

Assessment:  Fill in the a chart that practices reading the periodic table and calculating subatomic particles.  Choose 6 of the practiced atoms to draw on the back of the sheet, 2 neutral, 2 ions, and 2 isotopes

Note:  Quiz tomorrow on the atomic theorists

2-12-2010

Discussion:  Any  homework questions?  Use the homework examples to review drawing structures.

Activity:  Musical molecular structures!  A game that allows hands on "building" of molecular structures.

2-15/17-2010

Discussion:  Periodic table arrangement - The periodic table is arranged by classes, periods, and groups.  So what does each mean and who developed this arrangement?

Activity: 2-12 break up into groups of 4.  Each person has a role and specific information that they are to look up and then bring back to the group to share.

Activity: 2-13 Groups are assigned an element (each group has an element from a different group) to research.  A rubric was given to tell you exactly what to look up.  Create a creative announcement to introduce your element and group.  The computer or hand drawn announcement will accepted.

2-18-2010

Test 2 review

2-19-2010

Test 2

2-22-2010

Discussion:  States of matter and kinetic theory.  There are 5 states of matter.  We discussed the definition, shape, volume, particle movement, and examples.

Assessment:  The data activity on pg 71 in your book

2-23-2010

Discussion:  Phase changes and phase change diagram.

Lab:  Phase changes of water
Turn in the lab write up

Assessment:  Homework sheet

2-24-2010

Discussion:  Balloon demonstration to show how temperature, volume, and density of a gas are related.  Boyle's law and Charles's law equations and use.  Use the UNRAAVEL strategy to answer gas law problems.

Assessment:  Practice problems

2-25-2010

Discussion:  Review Boyle and Charles law with a magic square.  Introduce the combined gas law and work some problems.

Assessment:  Practice problems

2-26-2010

Discussion:  Ionic bonding...Ionic bonds are formed from a metal and a nonmetal.  Understand oxidation numbers and be able to draw the Lewis dot structures to represent the electron transfer between ions.

Assessment:  Ionic bond practice sheet

3-1-2010

Discussion:  Naming ionic bonds...ionic bonds are named by giving the cation first and the anion plus -ide second.

Activity:  Bond with a classmate activity.  Each person is a particular ion, find an appropriate classmate to bond with and together write the name.  Then find another to bond with.

Assessment:  Use the criss cross rule to name bonds and write formulas on the practice sheet

3-2-2010

Discussion:  Covalent bonds...covalent bonds are made from 2 nonmetals sharing at least one pair of electrons.

Assessment:  Make Lewis dot structure using fruity pebbles as electrons then movearound the cereal to create shared pairs.  Remove the cereal, draw thebond, and name it.

3-3-2010

Discussion:  Naming covalent...covalent bonds are named just like ionic except that you must add prefixes to the element name to signify how many atoms are present in the compound.

Assessment:  Practice sheet naming covalent compounds

3-4-2010

Discussion:  Naming bonds including polyatomics

Activity:  Practice identifying the three types of bonds discussed thus far then practice naming and writing formulas for compounds.

3-5-2010

Discussion:  Metallic bonds...Metallic bonds have a regular lattice pattern of cations surrounded by free floating electrons.

Activity:  TEST Monday, after a discussion on metallic bonds I passed out a review sheet and we went back over each concept that will be tested Monday.
