FIELD TRIPS:

The Nutcracker
Keppel Auditorium, Catawba College (Salisbury, NC)
December 10, 2009

Performed by: The Piedmont Dance Theatre and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra

The Nutcracker is of course a fantasy set at Christmas. The story begins on Christmas Eve and the guests of President Stahlbaum are gathering for the evenings festivities. As the guests gather in the salon with its tree decorated with presents, including a nutcracker that is put aside for safekeeping after being found on the floor, the children enter and engage in the usual frivolities of children on Christmas Eve, including Clara, whose godfather Drosselmeyer decides to entertain them. After reappearing, and slightly frightening the children in his wizard's garb, he wins the children over with a puppet show that tells a glorious tale of a princess rescued from the evil King Of Mice by her prince charming. He then gives the children some life-size puppets which proceed to dance, but after these have been put away the children slowly disperse to bed. However, the nutcracker remains and only Clara has any interest in it and takes it to bed with her. As it rests on her pillow beside her, she falls asleep and dreams herself into a fantastic world where toys become larger than life. She meets up with the Nutcracker Prince who defends her from the Mouse King.

Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
Salisbury, NC
February 17-19, 2010

The setting is a palace in Athens, one hour before the wedding of Thesus, Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta.  The festivities are interuppted when Egeus, and Athenian father, suddenly enters and pleads for help for Thesus.  Egeus is frantic because he has promised his daughter, Hermia, in marriage to Demetrius and has now learned that she is in love with and wants to marry Lysander.  Further, Hermia's childhood friend, Helena, is in love with Demetrius although he does not return her love, rather, he loves Hermia.  Theseus tries to help by forcing Hermia to make a decision by morning to marry Demetrius, join a nunnery, or die.

Many twists and turns weave this magical story that concludes with three happy couples returning to the palace for a triple wedding.
