Dear Parents and Students,
Happy New Year! This week your child will bring home his or her progress report for the second quarter. Please understand that your child has only three or four weeks to improve these grades. Make sure they are doing their homework and turning it in. You can e-mail teachers from schoolnotes if there are concerns. Thanks for your support this school year!
Homework for the week of January 5th-9th, 2009
1-5th - Go to the library, look in newspapers, magazines, on the Internet for feature articles. Begin to take notes on a topic that you want to write a feature article about.
1-6th - Using the LOL textbook, review R-103, Grammar Handbook Section "V"-Verbs. Know what each term means. Copy the six verb tenses.
1-7th - Using Verbs correctly LOL R-84-85. Read Section 8.1 and complete the sentences (1-6) under grammar practice.
1-8th - Commonly confused verbs, LOL R-85. Complete the grammar practice section all six sentences.
1-9th - Write a proposal letter to be turned in on Monday, January 12th.

Dear Parents,
A copy of your child's progress report in his or her Language Arts class has been given out today. Please schedule a conference through Guidance if your child has received less than a "C" for this second quarter. Also, please sign the grade sheet and return it to me. I will call parents to inform them of their child's progress, or you can e-mail me at this web site for information about your child's progress.

Winter Packets are being sent home for your child to complete and return on January 5, 2009. Students and parents can access the Winter Break packets by going to the school district's Website at www.pgcps.org, clicking on the Student's page, and clicking on the icon for Winter Break packets. Packets are available in English and Spanish. Please sign these packets and make sure that your child is reading 30 minutes each night and keeping a log.

11-19th -21st In Literature Circles there are several roles. Use the story, "Tell-Tale Heart" to answer questions for each role. These answers will be turned in on Friday 11-21 (Purpose - each student will be able to know every role used in the reading circle).

10-8th - Write a paragraph or two describing a memorable place; work on your biography.
10-9th - Holiday - complete your project and bring it in on Friday.

8-25th - Shop for supplies; list several ways you choose a book to read.
8-26th - What does the word "genre" mean? How many genres are there? List books and their genres that you have read.
8-27th - Chose a book from the Public Library (Everyone must have a library card) or buy a book that you will begin to read for completing our 30 books for the year campaign.
8-28th - students will take a reading survey in class. No homework from the text,but there is always reading homework for 30 minutes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from your chosen book. Please fill out the take-home reading log.

Homework for the week of September 8th-12th
Parents: Your child has been issued a textbook for this class. It should be kept at home until the end of the school year. Your child has checked this book in class and filled out a form stating the defects he or she found. Please check this book with your child for any defects that he or she might have overlooked, let me know what they are. Thanks for your support.
9-08- Complete the textbook survey questions from the handout given in class. Finish reading "Checkouts", LOL, pp. 22-28.
9-09- Write a personal letter to your parents explaining why you do or do not want to move to a new city. LOL, p. 30 Writing Section. Refer to R62 in the LOL for letter format; personal letters do not include number 2; therefore, your letter should have numbers 1,3,4,and 5.
9-10-Identify on character trait of a friend, teacher, or family member and list two examples that support this trait.
9-11- Complete the vocabulary section, LOL, p. 30, Synonyms
9-12- In class weekly quiz, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing a bcr about "Checkouts". Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday your homework is reading for 30 minutes!
