October News
Mrs. Hogge's Class
2nd Grade

Fall is in the air and we are all enjoying the cooler temperatures.  The Accelerated Reader Program is underway and most students are working hard to get the points for this quarter.  Please read books each night with your child.

On October 9th we will be going on a field trip to see a live production of "Aladdin" at the Meroney Theatre in Salisbury.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to see children and adults from Rowan County perform on stage.

Fire Prevention Week will be the week of October 6-10.  Enochville Fire Dept. will be bringing their equipment for our students to see close-up.  Please review your fire escape plan at home with your child and check all fire alarms in your home.

Math

Math facts are getting harder.  Please review the facts each night at home with your child.  Students have been learning about place value of numbers and comparing number values.  We will be moving into a chapter on number concepts and patterns.

Reading

Students are learning to become poets.  Through our reading program, students are learning to make rhymes and write poems.  We are also discovering that not all poems rhyme and that poets use the 5 senses when writing poetry.

Writing

As we practice writing each day, students are learning to plan stories using different types of planning maps and pictures.  Through this process, students are adding more detail to their stories.

Social Studies

What makes us good citizens in our community?  This has been our focus in Social Studies.  We have learned that there are many things we can do to show good citizenship at home, at school and in our community.  Ask your child for more details.
