A Note From Mrs. Robbins  

 It seems like lately we can’t catch a break with the weather.  On Tuesday, it is Groundhog’s Day and I hope he doe not see his shadow.  I don’t know about you all, but I am ready for some Spring weather.  As the reminder stated above, if the weather does get as bad as they are calling for, please make sure to tune in to the local weather channel or radio station for school closings.  Also, we do have the 100th day of school quickly approaching on Monday, 2/8.  Included in homework this week is a little reminder to send in 100 of something for the 100th day of school.  These items could be M&Ms, Skittles, gum. pencils, erasers, pieces of candy/popcorn/cereal, paper clips, etc.  (Anything small)  Put the items in a baggy and send them in with your child’s name on it.  Your child can start bringing these things in on Monday.  Also, we will be celebrating the Valentine’s Day treat on February 12th.  If your child would like to make/give valentines to the students of our class, EVERY student must get one.  That way, no student feels left out or unimportant.  I will be sending home a note to those of you that signed up at the beginning of the year to send in things for the treat.  Be looking for a note in your child’s planner.  The last new news I would like to discuss with you is your child’s homework.  Please make sure that you are helping your child do his or her homework, but not doing it for them.  I know life is very busy, but the more 1 on 1 help your child can get at home, the better off he/she will be.  I am sending home new writing homework instead of the book report for the next few weeks.  The county writing test will be given on March 4th and I want to give the students as much practice as possible.  Please work with your child to create a good beginning sentence telling what the whole story will be about.  Then write at least 3 more sentences about the picture giving lots of detail.  Last, they need a “BANG” ending sentence telling how they felt and why or connecting back to the beginning sentence.  One thing we have been working on a lot is not using first, next, then , and last anymore.  We use other words like: later, soon after that, finally or just stating what they did.  This is one things the people who grade the writing tests are looking for.  I greatly appreciate your help in supporting what your child is doing at school.  Lastly, we are really getting into the second half of the year, and I am pushing your child to think more on his/her own.  We are also working really hard on being good citizens by having “Star Students” who behave well.  If your child comes home and tells you he/she was a star student, make sure to congratulate them!  We are continuing to learn reading strategies and how to sound out.  However, our new focus is on long vowels.  If your child sees an “e” at the end of a word, make sure they see if the “e” can jump over.  In math, we are continuing fast facts and adding with higher numbers.  I know we have been doing adding a lot, but the skills are becoming harder and higher order thinking.  As always, if you have any questions for me, please call or write.  Again, I greatly appreciate all of your support and help throughout this year! 



***Homework

Please complete and return this homework folder by Thursday, February 4th so that your child will receive extra practice and credit toward his/her grade.  Listed below are our spelling words for next week.  Our spelling test will be Thursday, February 4th.  If you have any questions about homework, please ask in advance to the day it is due.  I’ll be glad to help your child and explain what is expected to you.  Thanks for your help in making first grade successful for your child!

Reminders/Information:  


1. Fast Facts: Starting next week, your child will begin taking fast fact tests.  Fast fact tests are timed tests for addition facts.  We will first start with adding 0 and 1.  Each following week, one fact will be added to homework for them to study.  On Thursdays, your child will have 3 minutes to do 30 questions.  It is very important that you work with your child on remembering addition facts including old facts learned as they will continue to be included on the tests each week.  Your child needs to move past using his/her fingers, counters, and drawing circles.  One way to help them do this is use flash cards at home.  You can either make them or buy some at Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store etc.  Not only do they need to do this for first grade, but they will have to do this in second grade as well.  *** The 0 and 1 facts will be on homework this Friday!


2. Skip Counting: We have been working on skip counting in class this week, and every week at calendar.  In first grade, your child has to be able to count by 2’s to 20, by 5’s to 100, and by 10’s to 100.  Please work on skip counting each night.  

Your child should count like this: 

By 2’s:  2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.  

By 5’s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100

By 10’s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100


  1. Dictation Tests: Starting next week, on the back of your child’s spelling test, you will find 2 sentences.  This is a dictation test.  It is a separate grade from the spelling test.  A dictation test is where I say a sentence and your child must spell the words correctly and have all components of a good sentence (capital letter at beginning, punctuation mark at the end, good spacing, sentence makes sense).  If there is a word they do not know how to spell, I will write it on the board.  Below, you will find how I grade the test.

Capital Letter: -5 Punctuation Mark: -5

Spelling of the spelling words this week: -5 Spelling of former spelling words: -1

Spacing: -1 Sentence makes sense: -5


This quarter, your child will take the Rowan County writing test.  This is a great way to practice for this test!  Later, I will also begin to send home writing homework that will further prepare your child.  As we work at school, please continue to work at home on writing complete sentences.  


4.   Book Report:  Your child can read any book that they would like.  It can be a library book, a book from home, a book from the public library, etc.  This book may also be recorded on your child’s reading log.  This is also something that you will need to help your child on for the first few times.  This is a great time to discuss the story elements (setting: where and when the story happened, characters: main people, animals, etc in the story, problem: what are the characters having a problem with, and solution: how the problem was solved) There are circles for your child to draw the main characters on.  You may or may not need all of these circles.  If you need to add extras that is fine, but keep in mind these circles are only for the MAIN characters.  The box is where your child should draw the setting.  Characters can be included in this picture.  If your child is having a problem with this have him/her look back in the book at the pictures.  If you have any questions, let me know!
