in First Grade! (This is our school's theme this year! Please help your child to sow great seeds this year by encouraging a positive, can do attitude in all that he/she may do!)
![]() When you Enter this Little room Consider yourself One of the special Members of a group who Enjoys working and caring
A Note From Mrs. Robbins It is almost here! Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I hope that you and your family are getting excited about the holiday season, and that you all have big plans of relaxations and family time. However, we are continuing to work here at school so it is important that your child be here as much as possible. I do understand that there is a lot of sickness going around and there will be some travel, but please keep in mind how important school is for your child. This week and through Thanksgiving, we will be focusing on the meaning of Thanksgiving. We will be going deeper into the story of Thanksgiving and analyzing how people were affected by the pilgrims coming to the new world. Your child will become a “historian” and learn how to look at facts about the pilgrims and indians to form their own ideas about Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it! I am very excited about this unit and I hope your child comes away with a lot of new knowledge about Thanksgiving. In math, we will continue adding, but with bigger numbers. As we continue to progress, it is important for you child to move past using counters and fingers to counting on and knowing addition facts automatically. We will begin working on this soon! In reading, we are really working on how to sound out words. At your child’s report card conference, I gave you the paper with letter combinations on them. I can tell that some students have already started practicing them at home. If your child is struggling to read, I can’t tell you how important this is. Also, when your child can read better, his/her comprehension will increase because they are spending less time sounding out and more time enjoying the story. This is when you will see your child really begin to read and grow confident! That’s what we want! Lastly, in writing, we have been working on writing a focused idea with details, and don’t forget about those complete sentences! Encourage this at home when writing! Lastly, I wanted to draw your attention one more time to the cookie dough sell. I know I have this in my reminders, but please sell as much as possible. The more your child sells, the more items we get to help your child in his/her education! ***Homework Please complete and return this homework folder by Thursday, November 19th so that your child will receive extra practice and credit toward his/her grade. Listed below are our spelling words for next week. Our spelling test will be Thursday, November 19th. If you have any questions about homework, please ask in advance to the day it is due. I’ll be glad to help your child and explain what is expected to you. Thanks for your help in making first grade successful for your child! Spelling Words: we when your can said ***Some students have 5 more: trip crab drip grin trap Friday: Reading page 138 Monday: Indian and Pilgrim math sheet Tuesday: Reading pages 151 AND 152 (front and back) pg. 152 -- Write in a complete sentence. Wednesday: Write a complete sentence with EACH spelling word. Therefore, your child should write 5 complete sentences. I know some students have only written 1 sentence with all 5 spelling words, but I really want 5 different complete sentences. Thanks! ** Vocabulary and stories for group 9 Reminders/Information: **Cookie Dough Sell!!! ***Please continue studying number words and numbers. *** Ice Cream: Please note that I have set aside a day for your child to get ice cream. It will now be on Fridays.
***Planner: Always check and sign your child's planner each night. This is my primary way of communicating with you. You may also write notes, etc. in there for me to see. (There will be a clip on the planner. Please leave the clip on there, as that is how we send home important information in the planner.)
***Parent Resources: Here is a link that is provided by Rowan County. It has many links available to help you help your child. Click on the statement below: "How Can I Help My Child?".
How Can I help My Child?
***P.I.: A great resource to help your child on their level in reading and math is P.I. I will send home information about this at a later time. ![]() Schedule 7:30-8:10 Morning Work / Announcements 8:10-10:00 Calendar/Language Arts 10:00-10:30 Enhancements 10:30-10:45 Restroom, Shared Reading, Prepare for Lunch 10:45-11:15 Lunch 11:15-12:10 Math 12:10-1:00 Writer's Workshop 1:00-1:15 Snack / Shared Reading 1:15-1:45 Recess 1:45-1:55 Pack Up 1:55-2:25 Science / Social Studies 2:25-2:30 Afternoon Announcements / Dismissal Enhancements: Monday: Music Tuesday: Media (A Week) Guidance (B Week) Wednesday: Art Thursday: No enhancement (Enrichment / Review) Friday: PE
