Second Grade

2008-2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone is ready to begin the new year on the right track.  We still have a lot of material to cover to get your child ready for 3rd grade.

Please make sure your child is reading at night for AR and returning homework each and every day.  Please ask your child each day to tell you something about his/her day at school.  Make school a wonderful learning experience that you can share as a family.

Remember that the weather is cold and every child needs a winter coat to wear on cold days!

AR

Many children have already met their AR goal for the 2nd quarter.  WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!

Continue to read at least 3 or more AR books each week.  The more points your child has, the more money they will earn for the AR store.

JANUARY  HAPPENINGS
Jan.  5 -  Students return to school
Jan. 15 - DRA testing/Skate Night
Jan. 19 - MLK Holiday
Jan. 21 - 2nd quarter ends
Jan. 22/23 - Teacher Workdays

AR
Students are reading and taking AR tests on a daily basis now.  Books can be checked out in the classroom and open checkout in the media center.  Please listen to your child read at night!  Look closely at the AR printout each Friday to see that your child is reading and testing on 3 or more books each week.  Comprehension scores should also be good and within the  required range.
READ!  READ! READ! READ!

School Supplies
Some children are in need of new crayons and pencils with erasers.  Ask your child if they need any of these items.

LANGUAGE ARTS/READING BLOCK
Your child will be involved in writer's workshop and guided reading activities during 9:30-11:30.  The children have been writing some really good stories so far.  We will be working all year to make wonderful authors out of your child.  Everyone seems to be enjoying the writing so far.  We are wanting the children to add more details to the stories that they write.  You can help out by encouraging them to write good sentences with their weekly spelling words.  Check for punctuation and capitalization skills in sentences that they write.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES BLOCKS
We will now be doing a  unit on Penguins and Winter Animals.

MATH
We are continuing to work on problem solving activities through our Superstar Math homework assignments.  These problems require your child to do more thinking to find the answers. I can tell that this assignment is helping our children solve math story problems easier.  We are now working on FRACTIONS.

BOX TOPS
Thank you for the help with Box Tops for Education.    Continue to save them and send them in as often as you can.  It helps our school earn needed supplies.  We will send in another batch of Box Tops in January.

LUNCH MONEY

Your child has an account in the cafeteria that you can put money into.  Any time you send money, make sure it is in an envelope with your child's name, pin number, and teacher's name on it.  Our lunch time is 11:35-12:05.  If you plan to eat with your child, go by the office and sign in first before coming to the room.

ENHANCEMENT CLASSES
All enhancement classes are from 8:20-9:00
MONDAY - Media/Guidance
TUESDAY - Art
WEDNESDAY - Music
THURSDAY - P.E.
FRIDAY -
Remember to wear tennis shoes on P.E. day.  It would also be a good idea to always return library books on Friday so they would be here on Monday of each week.

ABSENCES
Always send a note with your child when he/she has been out sick. This note is always sent to our SIMS office.

If at any time a problem arises, please don't hesitate to call or come by the school. I can be reached any day between the hours of 7:30-8:00 or 2:30-3:00 at 933-2534.

HOMEWORK
Helping your child with his/her homework each night will allow you to see how successful they are with their schoolwork and areas they may need work on. Please praise and encourage your child each day. When your child is absent, please make sure all classwork and homework is made up and returned so your child gets credit.
