First Grade IS the Place to Be!!

It's hard to believe how fast the First Quarter has passed!! 

Our students continue to work hard every day.  As the first quarter comes to an end, we are preparing for report card conferences.  Please attend; these are very important.

Continue to read every night with your child.  If they are having trouble with words, remind them to "sound out" words, check for hidden words, look at the picture for clues or ask an adult for help. Talk to your child about their reading.  Ask questions such as:

*What happened at the beginning, in the middle or at the end?

*Was there a problem and was it solved and how?

*Who were the characters?  Which was your favorite and why?

*Where did the story take place?

*Was there a funny part or what was their favorite part?

Discussing your child's reading with them greatly helps with their comprehension.

Second quarter reading logs will begin on October 28.  The goal for second quarter is 20 books.  Reading just 5 books earns your child a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut!!!

In Math we will begin learning more strategies for adding and subtracting with larger numbers.  We will continue to build on the concepts we covered during first quarter such as graphing and story problems.  The students will also learn numbers and number words up to fifty.

Writer's Workshop continues.  Your child will be bringing home a weekly writing sample.  These do not have to be returned.  Have your child read this to you.  Don't be surprised by how wonderful they are!!

   Our enhancement schedule is Monday - Music, Tuesday - Media or Guidance, Wednesday - Art and Friday - PE.  We have no enhancement on Thursday.  We will use this time for reviewing skills, shared reading or computer lab.

November 11 - Veteran's Day Holiday
