Welcome to our FIRST GRADE

CLICK HERE    TO SEE LOTS OF GOOD THINGS GOING ON IN OUR CLASSROOM!

Our First Graders are working so hard this year!!  Thank you for your support of our classroom and most of all for supporting your child.

*Please continue to review organizers, gray folders each night.
*Check for homework and sign the organizer and reading folder.

We will no longer be sending homework papers home.  The children will be writing the homework themselves in their organizers.  If you have questions, please contact me.

Our school is now participating in a great  program that involves every child.  We are learning "Twelve Power Words" throughout our school.  You may have already heard your child singing the song that we practice every morning.  Even in first grade we are using these words in our vocabulary.

Reading every night with your child is very important.  Even as the children reach higher reading levels, ten to fifteen minutes of nightly reading can greatly improve your their fluency.  If they are having trouble with words, remind them to "sound out" words, check for hidden words, look at the picture for clues or ask an adult for help. Talk to your child about their reading.

Ask questions such as:

*What happened at the beginning, in the middle or at the end?
*Was there a problem and was it solved and how?
*Who were the characters?
Which was your favorite and why?
*Where did the story take place?
*Was there a funny part or what was their favorite part?
Discussing your child's reading with them greatly helps with their comprehension.  Remember to read and record books for the quarterly reading log.

The goal this quarter is 20 books. The last day to turn in book logs will be January 20, 2010.
Writer's Workshop continues...the children are writing about their own experiences.  First they "brainstorm" and think of something they would like to write about; then they sketch their idea and then write sentences about it.  They are now writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.  We encourage them to use our Word Wall and to use "sound-writing" skills.  The children are very excited to share their work at school and at home.
