Welcome to our FIRST GRADE Webpage!
First Grade IS the Place to Be!!

Our First Graders are working so hard this year!!  Thank you for your support of our classroom and most of all for supporting your child.

Gray folders, organizers and reading folders are now coming home every night.  Please review these each night, check for homework and sign the organizer and reading folder.  If you have questions, please contact me.

Reading every night with your child is very important.  Even as the children reach higher reading levels, ten to fifteen minutes of nightly reading can greatly improve your their fluency.  If they are having trouble with words, remind them to "sound out" words, check for hidden words, look at the picture for clues or ask an adult for help. Talk to your child about their reading.  Ask questions such as:

*What happened at the beginning, in the middle or at the end?

*Was there a problem and was it solved and how?

*Who were the characters?  Which was your favorite and why?

*Where did the story take place?

*Was there a funny part or what was their favorite part?

Discussing your child's reading with them greatly helps with their comprehension.

Writer's Workshop has started...the children are writing about their own experiences.  First they "brainstorm" and think of something they would like to write about; then they sketch their idea and then write sentences about it.  We encourage them to use our Word Wall and to use "sound-writing" skills.  Each child will choose a writing example to share with you each week.

In Math we began with numbers 0 - 12. The students have learned the concepts of least, greater and between.  Next we will begin addition.  During first quarter we will also learn number words zero through twenty-five.  Please practice these at home.

Our enhancement schedule is Monday - Media or Guidance, Tuesday - Art, Wednesday - Music and Thursday - PE.  We have no enhancement on Friday.  We will use this time for reviewing skills, shared reading or computer lab.

Our lunch time is 10:40.  You are always welcome to join us!

Upcoming Dates...

September 21 - Fall Pictures

September 22 - PTA Open House

September 28 - Workday

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

I am so excited to be teaching your child!!
