ENGLISH Week of March 29 ENGLISH Monday: Discuss figurative language, imagery, and alliteration in "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere." Tuesday: Draw a picture illustrating the extended metaphor in Langston Hughes poem, "Mother to Son." Wednesday: Quiz on figurative language and poetry terms. Poetry scavenger hunt. Week of March 22 - 26 Monday: Review words often confused. Assignment: use these words correctly in sentences. Begin poetry unit. Powerpoint notes on figures of speech. Tuesday: Discuss two poems using figures of speech. Read page 616 - 619 in textbook. Complete worksheet on poetry terms. Wednesday: Poetry search in the library. Find examples of poems containing figures of speech. Thursday: Poem: "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" Friday: continue discussion of "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" - figurative language and sound in this poem. ENGLISH Week of March 15 - 19 Monday: Finish discussing "Flowers for Algernon." Write first copy of essay: Was having the surgery for increasing his intelligence a good thing for Charlie? Give your reasons (2) for or against using details from the story. Tuesday: Finish writing copy of Algernon essay in class. Wednesday: Type final copy of essay in computer lab. Thursday/Friday: learn about Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. ENGLISH Week of March 8 - 12 Finish role-play presentations on Monday. Read "Flowers for Algernon" in the textbook. (pages 32 - 62) Students will be assigned these pages over three days. They will fill in a chart showing the changes in Charlie: his growth and his regression. They will also be responsible for the vocabulary words on pages 32-33. Silent Reading + reading log each day: student choice. ENGLISH Week of March 2, 3, 4, 5 This week students will prepare and present to the class a role-play activity based on the biography they just read. They have two choices: to be "interviewed" by a fellow classmate or to give a solo performance in which they role play the person about whom they read. I have supplied a list of questions which they should use in their presentation. Each day we will continue silent reading and vocabulary discussion, also. ENGLISH Week of February 22 - 29: Students should have 6 pieces of writing completed by Thursday in a variety of genre. They should write a narrative this week using the "Explode the Moment" idea of including many details to make a few significant moments of time come alive with emotions, thoughts, dialogue, sensory details, each action, and figurative language. On March 2 (next Tuesday) biographies must be read. The activity following the reading will be to role-play the person about which they read. I will provide the format this week. ENGLISH Week of February 15 - 19: Continue reading biographies and writing on Achiever Characteristics Log Sheet. Continue writing a variety of genre for White Books. By Friday, students should have completed 5 pieces of writing. This week students will work on narrative and descriptive writing. Wednesday is a half-day. Students are dismissed at 11:57 Monday: Students will continue reading their biographies during SSR each day. They are filling out a log sheet on which they will list characteristics of "achievers" demonstrated by the subject of their biography. Students should be starting the third piece of writing for their book of writing. Today I will model how to take notes on an article, "The Characteristics of Achievers." Tuesday: Read biographies. Each group will then be assigned a section of the article mentioned above. Each group will read the section, take notes on most important ideas, and then present their ideas to the class. The class will fill a note-page on the characteristics of achievers. Wednesday: Half-day. Incentive for students who completed all assignments promptly during quarter 2. Thursday: Write for their book in the computer lab. Friday: Read biographies. Discussion on how to write description. Time to write. |
