WELCOME TO TEAM 6B !
We are very excited to begin another year at Contacting members of the team is most efficient by email. Because of the current budget situation, we have lost some office staff, and those remaining are handling an increased load. To request make up work after an absence of more than 3 days, or to schedule a team meeting, please contact Mrs. Parker, team leader.
Mrs. Paula Parker, Science, rm. 118 (team leader) PParker@aps1.net Mrs. Dolores Maienza, Math, rm. 120 DMaienza@aps1.net Ms. Caroline Maher, English, rm. 122 CMaher@aps1.net Mr. Tom Keane, Social Studies, rm. 123 TKeane@aps1.net Mr. Steve Bessette, Learning Specialist, rm. 124 SBessette@aps1.net Mrs. Tiffany Goodwin and Mr. Pete Sylvain, Instructional Assistants
As teachers, we are often asked by parents, “What can we do to help our child get the most out of school and be happy, successful students?” To that end, we have compiled a list!
TOP 5 THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP THEIR CHILD SUCCEED IN 6TH GRADE AT DOHERTY:
1. Help your child use all the tools of organization we offer. Students are using an assignment notebook daily, to record class activities and homework. It is helpful if parents themselves look this over daily with the child, and talk about what’s going on in each class. We also list class activities and assignments on our webpage at New.schoolnotes.com .
2. Encourage your child to attend extra-help sessions. Teachers on the team are available often for giving extra help, review, and clarification. Many students find it helpful to come just to get a jump on homework in a quiet, relaxed place. This should be seen as a benefit, not a punishment. Mr. Keane – most mornings from 7:00 am – 7:30 am., and lunch Mrs. Maienza – Tuesday afternoons from 2:05 – 3:00 pm Ms. Maher – Wednesday afternoons from 2:05 – 3:00 pm Mrs. Parker – Thursday afternoons from 2:05 – 3:00 pm Mr. Bessette – afternoons from 2:05 – 3:00 pm.
3. Assist your child in setting up a quiet, distraction free homework location and routine. Sometimes the bedroom is not always the best place for homework to be done. The kitchen or dining room table is often a place where parents can monitor pace and offer gentle assistance. Parents are not expected to correct the child’s work. Rather, we request it is checked only for completion. Help your child remember to put it back in the folder and bag, to avoid frustration at school over forgotten work.
4. Remind your child to check in for make-up work as soon as they return. Students are required to check in with teachers whose classes were missed because of absence before or after school on the first day they return. Students should not wait until the next class day. Although some work can be made up at home, often there are activities that will require the student to plan before/after school time to complete. Parents may contact the Team Leader (Mrs. Paula Parker) to collect make-up work for extended absences only (more than 3 days).
5. Help your child prepare physically to be the best student they can be! In our hectic lives today, we are often tempted to skip the diet and sleep habits that we know are best. Please assist your child in preparing healthy snacks to get them through our very long day. We allow snacks at 9:30 and again at 11:05. Candy and soda are not allowed. As always, water is best. Young people of middle school age still require 8-10 hours of sleep. Encourage your child to settle down with a good book early in the evening, in order to be ready to sleep at a reasonable hour.
In Grade 6 at Doherty, we are constantly striving to challenge each student to succeed and grow as a student and a person. We offer many opportunities throughout the year to be recognized for outstanding effort and achievement. Student Achievement Awards, Lunch and a Movie, Student Recognition Awards (by term, formerly Honor Roll) are but a few.
All of us look forward to getting to know the students of 6B 2011-2012! We expect an exciting year with your child. We each have an abundance of challenging activities and topics to tackle in our individual subjects, and we’re sure you’ll be hearing about them over the dinner table.
Team Day will be scheduled later this month, and Progress Reports for the first term are scheduled to be sent home mid-October. Please look for these.
We look forward to seeing all parents at our Back To School Night on October 5th, and we thank you in advance for your continued support at home to help your child be as successful as possible. Remember, middle school is a journey, so pack carefully to make the most of it! Team 6B
6B INFORMATION (in a nut shell !) Contacts: Parents are encouraged to contact individual teachers with questions or concerns specific to each subject. For general team questions, or larger concerns that may warrant a team meeting, please contact Mrs. Paula Parker, Team Leader.

Absences and Make Up Work: 1.) Students that are absent for a short time are encouraged to check the team website new.schoolnotes.com – search for Steve Bessette) and call a friend to get assignment information. They must also check in with each teacher upon their return. 2.) If a student is absent due to illness for more than 3 days, parents may contact Mrs. Paula Parker, the Team Leader, by email (pparker@aps1.net) before 9:00 am to request work from the team. This can be picked up in the main office after 3:00. You should have the student’s locker # and combination with you to retrieve books. ** If your child is absent for an unexcused reason according to our handbook, they should follow the first procedure, and plan ample after school time to catch up upon return. Snack: 9:30 and 11:05 are designated snack times. Due to our very late lunch (12:45!), we strongly encourage students to bring 2 healthy snacks each day.
Opportunities for Recognition: In Grade 6 at Doherty, we are constantly striving to challenge each student to succeed and grow as a student and a person. We offer many opportunities throughout the year to be recognized for outstanding effort and achievement. Student Achievement Awards, Lunch and a Movie, Student Recognition Awards and Homework Honor Roll (by term), are but a few. We ask that you encourage your child to be the best person they can be in all areas.
