6th Grade – Core Subjects

“Think left and think right and think low and think high.  Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!”                                                   -Dr. Suess

Overview:

Sixth grade is a year of transitions.  Your child now moves from class to class and is responsible for arriving on time and with the proper materials.  Organization is essential!  The sixth grade team realizes that students will grow throughout the school year.  We start the year teaching routines and organization.  As the year moves on, increased independence is fostered.

Class Materials:

Students must come to class every day prepared to learn with the following materials.  Failure to do so may result in a verbal warning or a lunch detention.

  • Two or more pencils with erasers
  • Pen or thin marker
  • Binders
    • Math - Three-ring math binder with six sections for “Forms”, “Journal”, “Vocabulary”, “Homework”, “Assessments”, and “Math Book”
    • Language Arts – Three-ring binder with sections for “ Literature”, “Grammar”, “Spelling” and “Writing”
  • Notebook paper (about one package per trimester)
  • Assignment book

Grading:

Students will receive traditional letter grades on their report cards in grade 6.  Grades are based on points.  Each task is assigned points based on its relative complexity, importance, duration, etc.  For example homework will generally be worth 5 – 10 points.  A pop quiz might be worth 10 points, while a major project might be a total of 50 -100 points. The grade is determined by a calculation of the total number of points earned out of the total number of points possible.

Current grades for each student can be accessed by parents and students using the PowerSchool portal.  If you have not already done so, sign up for PowerSchool in the main office.

Homework:

Students are responsible for all homework.  If they do not understand a problem, it should not be left blank.  Instead, they should write down a specific question about the problem that they will ask in class.  Homework will be checked on the day it is due.  Homework will generally be graded and included in the final grade.

Late Work:

If a student is absent, he/she will have an extra day to complete work for every day that he/she was out of school. This might include classwork as well as homework assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to make contact with teachers or to check the web page under “Homework” regarding missed work.  One way to help is to assign yourself a study buddy that you can trust to collect any materials that were passed out in class and to provide you with good notes.

Late work without an absence will receive less credit as follows:

1 day late = reduced credit

2 days late = 0 credit

Communicating with Teachers

Each teacher maintains a website linked to the Hall School Web Page: http://www.willingtonpublicschools.org/hms/

Email is an easy way to contact a teacher during the school day because we are directly teaching or working with students.  Before or after school we can be reached by telephone.

PowerSchool Information

Dear Parents,

We are very pleased this year to be using PowerSchool with the ParentPortal capability. The purpose of the ParentPortal is to facilitate conversations with your child about their school work. Questions about individual assignments should be discussed with your child. Please understand that grades are updated weekly. In many cases, the grade is posted before the student receives the work back. Before contacting a teacher about a specific assignment, please ask your child to see the work.

It is important to note that sixth grade is a year of extreme growth in many ways. As teachers, we are stretching your child’s learning. It is normal and expected for children to have difficulties with some assignments. Please remember that a low score on a few assignments does not have a significant impact on a student’s grade. To foster learning and develop independence, students should be encouraged to ask their teachers questions about their assignments. This is the most effective way to impact their learning and begin the transition to being responsible, life-long learners.

                                                   Sincerely,

                                                        The Sixth Grade Team
