The Second Chance Alternative Learning Environment (SCALE) program is an alternative learning program that seeks to teach students to change aggressive and inappropriate behaviors and to increase academic achievement through behavior modification. Our focus for the third 9 Weeks. Math: Students will attend math at grade level and then receive individualized instruction using Study Island in the computer lab to reinforce these math lessons. ELA: As a class, we will finish reading and discussing Milkweed, a novel for Young Adults by acclaimed author Jerry Spinelli. Students will continue to study literary terminology. We will correct errors in spoken and written expression. We will develop the stance of the critic and analyze the author's purpose. Social Studies: Students will study the key historical events and figures of the United States with a focus on North Carolina. We will continue to study Africa and Europe and their relationship to current events. We will continue to use maps, charts, and graphs to discuss information about people, places, and regions. We will also study the impact of politics, religion, and ethnicity on current events. Science: Students will study energy transformation and conservation, Newton's Laws, and simple machines.
