The Second Chance Alternative Learning Environment (SCALE) program is an alternative learning program that seeks to teach students to change aggressive and inappropriate behaviors and to increase academic achievement through behavior modification. Our focus for the second 9 Weeks. Reading Block: Students will receive individualized instruction for Reading in the computer lab. As a class, we will read and discuss The Outsiders, a novel for Young Adults by acclaimed author S. E. Hinton. This book is a classic which many parents will recognize from their own reading history. It continues to speak to students, today, encouraging them to experience life fully and make wise choices. ELA: Students will study drama and literary terminology. We will correct errors in spoken and written expression. We will study cause and effect, problem and solution, and author's bias. We will learn to write more complex paragraphs. Social Studies: Students will study the key historical events and figures of Africa and Europe and their relationship to current events. We will continue to use maps, charts, and graphs to discuss information about people, places, and regions. We will also study the impact of politics, religion, and ethnicity on current events. Science: Students will receive individualized instruction for Science in the computer lab. As a class, we will study cells, levels of organization, organ systems, and the solar system. Math: Students will receive individualized instruction for Math in the computer lab. As a class, we will study inequalities, order of operations, exponents, scientific notation, and statistics.
