                   HOMEWORK

___Mon:  Free dress and bring outdoor toys and games

___Tues: Camp out day tomorrow

___Wed:  talent show day tomorrow

___Thurs: Movie day tomorrow

Look at what we are learning!

We will be learning about friendship and working together. We will continue to review skills in all subjects. Have a great and safe summer.

We have a fun week planned. Here are a few things to remember:

May 15-Tues. Outdoor Fun Day (free dress day, bring balls, jump ropes, plastic bats, and games to play)

May 16-Wed. Camp Out Day (bring a flashlight)

May 17-Thurs. Talent Show Day (come prepared to show off talent)

May 18- Fri. Movie Day (bring a G rated movie) We will celebrate June/July birthdays too. Parents, let me know if you are sending cupcakes, so we don’t have too many. Jump & Slide for good stuff (AR winners, honor roll, perfect attendance, etc)

May 21 Mon. Awards Day and Clean up and Clean out day (bring a big bag to school to take home school supplies and other items)

May 22. Tues. Last day for students: 60 % day. Don’t bring backpack. End of the year party at 9:15 – 9:45. Check out from kids from room. Wacky Tacky Day. Get report cards.

Dismissal times: Walkers to the Upper 10:40, Car riders 10:45, Bus riders 10:55

6 ½ Days Till Summer (Wow!)

Awards Day information: Awards are given out only to perfect attendance, All A’s for the year, and one girl and boy in each class for citizenship. Look for a note in your child’s folder if they will be getting one of these awards. Keep the citizenship award a secret please. Parents of these children are invited to attend the ceremony. A-B honor roll and other awards will be given in the classroom at a different time.

If your child will not be at school next Tuesday, send a note letting me know. I need to send home all their supplies with them their last day.  You can pick up their report card in the office that afternoon or any weekday after that.

May 22 we will have an end of the year party at 9:15 – 9:45. I think it will be ice cream with different toppings. If you would like to help or bring an item, please email Sarah Tucker at andytucker01@comcast.net. You can check out your child from the room.

I can’t believe this is the last newsletter I’ll be writing. I have so enjoyed getting to know you. Thank you for all the help you gave the class throughout the year. We couldn’t have done half the things we did without great parents. Your child has been a blessing. I have learned so many things from him/her. Good luck in the future. I hope I made a difference in their life.

            Have a great summer!

Folders - Please remember to check your child's folder daily!  Take time to go through the work and talk with your child about his/her day.  Also remember to send any notes or money in the zipper bag.  Money needs to be in an envelope or ziplock bag with your child's name on it and what the money is for. This is the only place we look for correspondence  from you.  If you change a way your child goes home, we must have a written note from you.

On Tuesdays, your child will bring home signed papers.  Please sign the papers and return promptly on Wednesdays.

Tardies- Please remember children must in the classroom by 7:40 each day. Our doors open at 7:00.  If you drive to school, please leave early enough to get here on time.  The office will begin counting tardies soon. Children who are tardy 5 times in a 9 weeks period must spend 1/2 day in In School Suspension.  Please don't let that happen!

Visitors - Please go by the office and pick up a visitor tag any time you are on campus.

WATER -   We want every child to drink plenty of water each day, especially on hot days!    We are going to try having everyone bring a water bottle each day.   If you pack a small water for snack, you may want to send an extra water for recess/pe time.

PE -  Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for outside play including tennis shoes, no sandals or flip flops.  STUDENTS CAN WEAR CAPS FOR PE!  This may help to protect them from the sun.   You may want to apply sunscreen each morning too.

LUNCH/BREAKFAST/MONEY – This year the students will have a choice of a hot plate lunch or a salad.  Of course, you may also pack a lunch from home.   Please place lunch money inside the Ziploc bag in his/her folder.   You may prepay for the week or month. We will also be offering breakfast this year.   I prefer that you pay for week or month.  (It really simplifies the bookkeeping in our classroom.)  THANKS!

School District is to empower all students with the knowledge and skills to create their own future; to become passionate, lifelong learners; and to contribute cooperatively to a diverse and changing world."Attendance   If your child is absent from school, he/she must return with a note from the parent or doctor. If you only miss one day, don't worry about calling for make-up work

Helping your child with addition:
The following thinking strategies are useful for learning addition facts:
Adding zero
: The sum is always the other number. 8 0 = 8, 0 4 = 4
Counting on by 1 or 2: Find sums like 5 1 or 6 2 by simply counting on.
Combinations to 5: Learn combinations to 5 such as 3 2 or 4 1
Combinations to 10: Learn combinations to 10 such as 6 4 or 8 2
Doubles: Learn sums of doubles such as 4 4 or 6 6
Nines: When adding nines, the one digit in the sum is always one less than the number added to nine. For example 7 9 = 16, the 6 is one less than 7. Another example, 5 9 = 14
Doubles plus one: When addends are consecutive numbers, count on from the double. For instance, 7 8 becomes 7 7 1. Another example, 8 9 becomes 8 8 1
Sharing doubles: This method works when the addends differ by two. When this occurs, it is possible to subtract 1 from one addend and add to the other addend. This results in a doubles fact that has already been memorized, 7 5 becomes 6 6. Another example, 6 8 becomes 7 7.
Commutative Property: By changing the order, 3 4 to 4 3, facts can be recalled.

Helping your child with subtraction:  The following thinking strategies for useful for learning subtraction facts:
Fact Families: This strategy works when students understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. When students see 6 - 2 and think 2 ? = 6
Counting backwards: This method is similar to counting on in addition. It isn't quite as easy. Students should only count back up to three.
Zeros: The pattern for subtracting zero is readily recognizable. 5 - 0 = 5
Sames: This method is used when a number is subtracted from itself; this is another generalization that students can quickly identify. 7 - 7 = 0
