Lesson Plan for Moonlight Watch Teachers/Team: Kern, Jenkins, Cook, Miller, Annas, Earnhardt, Trivette, Lewis Grade Level: 3rd Curriculum Area(s): Science, Technology, Media, Art, PE, Music, Writing Science: Curriculum Goals: Objective 3.02 Observe that objects in the sky have patterns of movement including: Sun, Moon, Stars. Objective 3.04 Use appropriate tools to make observations of the moon. Objective 3.05 Observe and record the change in the apparent shape of the moon from day to day over several months and describe the pattern of changes. Essential Question: How does the moon change shape from day to day? Music: We sang the song “Phases of the Moon to the tune of “If you are happy and you know it.” We played rhythm sticks to accompany. We rapped the “Solar System Rap.” Objective 1.01 Sing simple songs with increased pitch accuracy. Objective 2.05 Play independent instrumental parts while others sing and/or play rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic parts. Objective 2.06 Respond to the cues of a conductor. Objective 8.01 Identify similarities and differences in the meanings of common terms used in the other arts. Objective 8.02 Identify ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are related to those of music. Objective 8.03 Demonstrate the character traits of responsibility, self-discipline, and perseverance while informally or formally participating in music. Art: What is space? How does the sun affect the planets as they move around it? How does the light from the sun reflect off the moon to create light in the darkness of night? What is value? How do we create and show value in our art work? What is space? How does the sun affect the planets as they move around it in space? What about the moon? (students brainstorm about space) -I demonstrate the affects of the sun on the planets by using a tennis ball and an artist drawing lamp. Students see how the light is brighter on the side of the planet facing the light and as the light has to bend around the sphere the brightness dulls to darkness. -I demonstrate this affect on black paper by drawing a circle and using white crayon to imitate the values from white to gray to black. This creates a sense of depth and 3- Dimentionality. (From shape to form) -Students use what they have learned to create their own drawing of planets and moons in space. (Include at least 1 planet and moon, 1 sun, and stars) Goals: Objective 1.03 Select color both for emotional appeal and realism. Objective 3.03 Identify geometric shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, oval, octagon, and pentagon. Objective 3.04 Use a variety of geometric and organic shapes in creating own work. Objective 3.05 Compare objects in space through relative size and position including such things as: overlapping, foreground, middle ground, background, and amount of detail. PE: Scooter Board=Spaceship Student=Astronauts Balls=Meteors Students are divided into 2 groups: riders and rollers The riders are the astronauts trying to make it to the other end of the gym without getting hit with a ball (meteor). If they make it safely to the other end of the gym, they get one point for their team. If they get hit by a ball (meteor), they are destroyed. The rollers have control of the balls(meteors). They are trying to roll the ball so that it hits the scooter board (spaceship) of the astronaut. Groups will change places after the riders have four attempts. NASPE Standard: 2 Competency goal:7 Objectives: 7.01, 7.04 Objective 8.02 Engage in regular physical activity throughout the day. Technology: Objective 2.09 Identify, discuss, and use multimedia tools (e.g., capture, create, edit, publish). Strand - Multimedia/Presentation Objective 3.04 Identify, discuss, and use multimedia to present ideas/concepts/information in a variety of ways as a class. Strand - Multimedia/Presentation Information Skills: Objective 1.01 Participate in read-aloud, storytelling, book talking, silent and voluntary reading experiences. Objective 2.05-Determine usefulness of information resources. Objective 4.05-Gather information. Objective 4.07-Organize and use information. Objective 4.09-Present information in a variety of formats (print, graphical, audio, video, multimedia) Objective 4.10-Evaluate the product. Language Arts: Essential Question: How can a word study increase vocabulary? Did Lunar Lingo paper. Find the words and circle. Objective: 1.04 Increase sight vocabulary and writing vocabulary through; word study, listening and discussion. Essential Question: How can I use available resources to learn more about words? Objective 1.05 Use word reference materials (dictionary, glossary) to confirm decoding skills, verify spelling and extend meanings of words. Essential Question: How do my prior experiences help me understand the text? Objective 1.03 Integrate prior experiences and all sources of information in the text when reading. Objective 2.02 Interact with the text before, during and after reading by previewing, the text, locating info for specific purposes, making connections. Writing: Objective 2.02 -Interact with the text before, during and after reading by previewing, the text, locating info for specific purposes, making connections. Essential Question: How does my prior knowledge about the moon help me understand new content? Objective 4.02 Use written language to share and present information, and explain prior knowledge. Math: Essential Question: What are possible strategies for adding and subtracting numbers? Objective 1.02-Develop fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction through 9,999 using strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. Objective 1.06-Develop flexibility in solving problems by selecting strategies and using mental computation, estimation, calculators or computers and paper and pencil. Proposed Learning Activities (Briefly state the activities students will do to complete this project.) Each day in February the students will go out and look at the moon and draw on the sheet Moon Phases. Write up results of observations. Kid Pix Phases of the moon. Musical activity in Music class. Tune to the Wheels of the bus. Art activity in art class on the moon and space. Description of Culminating Task: Put the phases of the moon together in order by how they occur during the month. Assessment: Look at slideshow and teacher judgement for assessment. Responsibilities (Teacher):Science introduction in classroom. Language and writing activities in classroom. Introduction with written and hand drawn phases of the moon. Responsibilities (Media Coordinator): Read The Moon by Carmen Bredeson. Help put slide show together.
