Ms. Boscarino's Poetry Corner

Two years ago, 5th Graders completed a unit on Poets and Painters.  Students were inspired by Faith Ringgold's art and Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry.  Here are several poems written about masks that now decorate our classroom walls:

The Mask of a Cat

I am independent and sneaky.
I can swerve through alleys and between trash cans alone.
I am like a sly fox.

The alley is my home.
There are trash cans and others cats to fight.
I am like a sly fox.

I like to fish for food in trash cans.
I have no other food source.
I am like a sly fox.

I wish to be the strongest cat in town.
I ask mankind not to take strays cats from their homes.
I am like a sly fox.

The Mask of a Frog

I am exotic and energetic.
There is nothing that will get in my way.
I am a changing mystery.

The swampy ponds are my motels.
They are like endless baths.
I am a changing mystery.

On a comfy spot, I search for flies.
It is greatly exciting.
I am a changing mystery.

I wish to own all land and water, never a predator in sight.
Save the forests, respect me,
I am a changing mystery.

The Mask of a Bird

I am carefree and energetic.
My wings take me to places all over the world.
I listen to everyone speak.

The trees and sky are my home.
The trees sway with the breeze and sing with us, the birds.
I listen to everyone speak.

Looking down at everyone from the sky makes me feel like a spy.
It tells me facts about them.
I listen to everyone speak.

I wish to live happily forever;
Do not destroy my, the trees.
For I listen to everyone speak.
