The focus of 7th grade language arts is challenging, but fun. The selections we read in literature lend themselves well to the argumentative/evaluative types of writing students must master this year. The students will be participating in debates as they polish their ability to support their opinions about various topics. We will constantly strive to operate in the higher level thinking skills of Bloom's Taxonomy in everything we study. * The single most important thing any student can do to improve in language arts is READ! North Carolina Standard Course of Study for 7th Grade Language Arts Year Long Goals and Objectives (Please "scroll down" for each specific quarter) 1.01 Narrate an expressive account. 1.02 Respond to expressive materials that are read, heard, and/or viewed. 1.03 Interact in group settings 1.04 Reflect on learning experiences 2.01 Respond to informational materials that are read, heard, and/or viewed. 3.02 Explore and analyze the problem-solution process. 3.03 Study and create arguments that evaluate. 4.01 Analyze the purpose of the author/creator. 4.02 Develop (w/ assistance) and supply criteria to evaluate the quality of communication. 4.03 Develop the stance of a critic by remaining fair-minded and open to interpretation and creating a critical response. 5.01 Increase fluency, comprehension, and insight through a meaningful and comprehensive literacy program. 6.01 Model an understanding of conventional written and spoken expression. 6.02 Continue to identify and edit errors in spoken and written English. 1st Quarter Content Focus Goal 5.02 (Literary Terms / Reading Skills / Vocabulary) Study the characteristics of literary genres: Fiction, Fantasy, Folklore: novel, short story, myth Non-Fiction: biography, autobiography, informational text, essay Poetry: pattern poetry, blank verse Drama: play format, acting Writing & Grammar Focus Writing Letters, Literary Analysis, Creative Writing Punctuation within various sentence types, Subject/Verb Agreement, Sentence vs. Fragment 2nd Quarter Content Focus Goal 2.02 (Research Skills) Use multiple sources of print and non-print information in designing and developing informational materials. Writing & Grammar Focus Content specific format Editing Marks, Identify/Edit errors 3rd Quarter Content Focus Goal 3.01 (Argument) Explore and analyze argumentative works that are read, heard, and/or viewed. Fact vs. opinion, problem-solution process, author's word stance and focus, author's purpose and stance, audience, evaluation, response to public documents Writing & Grammar Focus Argumentative, evaluation, persuasive Parts of speech 4th Quarter Content Focus Goal 5.02 Review (Poetic and Dramatic Devices) Study the characteristics of literary genres. Poetry Focus: Figurative language and poetic style Writing & Grammar Focus Problem-solution Word part vocabulary * Supplies / Classroom Needs Several parents have asked about needed items for classroom use. Currently, we have an ample supply of copy paper, markers, construction paper, and pencils. Thank you to all who have donated supplies. As part of our classroom discipline incentive, students may earn a candy treat when behavior is exemplary. I can already tell that these students are going to be rewarded a lot! So, the most appreciated items at this time are: - Bags of "Smarties" candies (the ones without the gum, please) - Bags of "Dum-Dum" Suckers *
