Physical Education Classes
Some things you can expect in PE are team and individual sports, team building activities, aerobics, gymnastics, dance and yes the Fitness Challenge. This year students will be participating in a Ridge runner activity.  In this activity the students will be increasing their cardiorespiratory endurance through a progressive- continuous run.  We will start running 3 minutes a day and build up to 12 minutes.  The activity last 10 weeks and throughout the weeks students will be plotting their accomplished miles on the Appalachian Trail Map. As always try to get your child active outside the classroom. Evening walks, jogs, bike rides, etc are a great way to not only exercise with your child but a great time to catch up during your busy schedules.
Students are expected to wear the designated PE uniform for all PE classes. Uniforms will be available throughout the year for $20.

Health
Health will consist of 5 main units.  We will be starting with the Fitness unit where we will discuss the five areas of fitness and how to increase your quality of life.  The second unit the class will cover will be the nutrition unit.  During this unit students will begin to understand the importance of a balanced diet, different types of diets, and how to calculate calories. During this unit students will be given a hands on homework project where they will analyze why we eat the foods we eat, cook with or without the help of a parent and begin to understand budgeting.  The first two units will be tied together through body typing and calculating body mass.  The third unit will be on alcohol/drugs/tobacco.  Students will learn how each effect the body with both short and long term uses through videos, class discussions and labs. Students will also learn where they can get help for themselves and others in the community.  The fourth unit will cover Family Life.  During this unit students will learn about the male and female reproductive systems, the importance of abstinence and possible consequences of not choosing abstinence.  Finally the last unit that will be covered is Anti-bullying and boosting Self Esteem.  Throughout the quarter students will engage in cooperative games and activities. They will also be analyzing why we react the way we do in certain situations and the importance of thinking before we speak.
