Mrs. Powell's Class News

Our school Theme: "Blast Off into Learning!"

Mission Statement: "to develop globally competitive schools that inspire, challenge, and empower students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives, and demonstrate knowledgeable, responsible citizenship in an increasingly  challenging world.."

Welcome back to school!  We will be working very hard from now until June.  Below you will find some areas that many of our students are having trouble with.  Report Cards go home at the beginning of February and possible retention notes go home as well.  Please work with your child on some of the areas they are having difficulty.

Over half of the class is having trouble with sounding out words, especially when writing a sentence.  We are still sound spelling, which means we write the sounds that we hear. This means that the words will not always be spelled correctly.  Some can get the beginning sound but stop and do not try to sound out any of the other sounds in the words.  If your child practices at home, encourage them to sound out the beginning sound , middle and ending sounds.

Some students need to work on being sure they know their sounds.  We have noticed several that are not strong in this area. Call out letters and have them give you the correct sound.

Important Dates:

January  15th Dress Down Day for $1.00

January 19th Holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.

January 22nd Teacher workday

January 23rd Teacher workday

January  23rd  SGA Blood Drive

Below you will find some areas everyone can work on at home.

Language Arts - Work on letter sounds, recognition, and work on writing letters correctly.  This means they need to know them in order and out of order. Be sure your children know the difference between uppercase/capital letters (big) and lowercase letters (small).

Writing - Continue letting your child draw and begin writing.  Picture needs to include themselves if the writing is about something they did. It also needs to include a setting. (This shows us where the writing takes place.) If your child is doing well in these areas, have them begin to add details to the picture.   Children can then begin to sound out words to write a sentence.  Capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, and a period at the end.

Children will need to be learning to recognizing and begin to spell the high frequency words from the Kindergarten list. We will be checking recognition of these words this quarter.

Math - Work on number recognition and number writing. We are still having students who are writing the numbers backwards  or do not know the numbers yet.  We have been working on numbers 1-20.

Work on creating and recognizing patterns.

Oral Counting - Practice this in the car.  The more they practice the higher they will be able to go. We check this every quarter.

Work on sorting objects by different attributes.
