Week of May 29-June1: We will finish up the trig notebooks this week and have a quiz on the 16-point circle (radians) on Thursday.  Ice cream sundaes on Tuesday, and Pizza on Thursday!  If you would like to stay for help after school, please ask ahead of time.  I have duty this week in both mornign and afternoon.  Please bring your text book and/or disk to turn in on Tuesday. Your exam (trig only -- open notebook!) is the morning of  June 4.

Week of may 21-23: Geomtry SOL test on Monday morning. You will have a substitue Mon-Wed and will work on review of trig worksheets in class.  On Thursday we will go over the review worksheets and start learning the 16-point circle in radian measure.  I will have morning and afternoon duty every day from now through the end of school.  I will be available for help this week on Friday afternoon 3:50-4:30.

Week of May 7-11 We will have a trig quiz on Tuesday covering ws#2-7, and a quiz (5 minutes!) on the 16-point circle on Wed.   Starting Wed., we will take a break from trig to do some intensive review for the Geometry SOL (which you will take on Monday, May 21 in the morning.) You may turn in up to 3 J-Labs each day this week and next week for extra credit.  On each day that you turn in at least one J-Lab, you will earn "parts" of an ice cream sundae.  Beginning Thursday, we will have daily short "flash quizzes" at the start of class covering the topics reviewed the previous day.  Walk-in help 8:15 on Mon-Fri. and 3:40 on Mon., Wed. and Thurs.

Week of May 1-3: We will continue to work in the trig notebooks and to review SOLs in the workbook.  Quiz next Tuesday (May 8) on assignments 4-7 plus complements and supplements of angles measures in radians. Tues: Complementary and Supplementary angles (radians) REference Angles  HW: Sol p 25-26and Trig assignment #4; 1-10

Wed: The reciprocal trig ratios and finding the other 5 trig ratios given and one of them.  HW SOL p27-28  and Trig assignment #5; 1-6

Thurs: Using "The Unit Circle" to find sine and cosine.  HW assignmetn #6  Try it.  Draw each angle in standard position on your unit circle.  estimate (some you will know exactly!)  the x-coordinate and y-coordinate where the terminal side touches the unit circle.  Then you know that the cos R = x, sin R = y, and the tan R = y/x.  For #1, a 180 degree angle, the point on the unit circle will be (-1,0).  So . . . . cos(180) = -1,  sin(180)= 0, and tan(180) = 0/-1 = 0.  Keep going.  (Hint: in #7, the tan(-90) = "does not exist".)   Interim reports are due on Tuesday.

Fri: Short quiz.  "The 16-point Circle" in degrees.  Ice Cream Challenge begins on Monday!! You can earn one "part" of the sundae for each day you turn in at least 1 J-Lab (9 or 10 correct).  HW: finish assignment 6 and do assignment 7.  SOL p 31-32.  Interims (below B) are due Tuesday.

Week of April 23-27: We will continue to review for the SOL and to work on Trig.  Quiz Monday on last weeks trig lessons, and a shorter quiz on Friday which will include the lessons for this week.  Up to 3 "J Labs" may be turned in for extra credit on Friday.(See instructions in downloads and follow them carefully in order to get credit.) Thurs: Converting:   degrees <--> radians  HW: Trig assignment #3, also do a "quiz study sheet" (divide a piece of paper into 5 sections (use front and back) and select at least 3 problems to re-work (not just copy!) from LOS, LOC, and trig assignments 1-3.  Up to 3 J-Labs may be turned in tomorrow for extra credit.  Follow the directions: results sheet stapled on top of your "work paper" (1-5 on front, 6-10 on back).

Week of April 16-20: We will start working in your trig notebooks again this week.  After a quick review of the right triangle trig we did earlier, we will learn the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines (which can be used for non-right, as well as right triangles.)  You will also be issued an SOL review workbook which we will use for part of your homework assignments (you may write in it).  We will be going to the computer lab on Friday to practice some of the new style SOL questions and to look at the geometry J-Labs.  The extra credit factoring packet is due on Wednesday. We will have a quiz next Monday on "Triangle Trig".  Walk-in help this week: 8:15 Mon-Thurs; and 3:40 on Tues and Wed.

Week of Mar 5-9: We will finish up transformations and symmetry (Ch 9), look at the equation for graphing a circle, and begin Ch 11 (Solids) this week. Ch 9 VOCAB due WEd.  Vocab quiz Thurs. Quiz Fri on ch 9 and equation of circles.  Walk- in help: 8:15 on Tues, Wed, and Fri; 3:40 on Mon, Tues and Thurs. A retest will be given on the Ch 10 test next Monday afterschool and Tuesday before school.  In order to take the re-test (which will be averaged with the original test grade) a student must complete the 2-column test corrections sheet. The correct answers are in downloads.  On the corrections sheet you must show the correct work and answer in the right column and EXPLAIN fully how you should have worked the problem in the left column.  You must convince me -- in words-- that you now know how to work each type of problem you missed. You may get help from me or from anyone else with re-working the problems, but the explanations should be in your own words.

Week of Jan 30-Feb 3: All students must have a scientific or graphing calculator to use in class and at home by Wednesday.  Any scientific or graphing calculator will do. (It must have SIN, COS, TAN buttons.)  If you want to purchase one, I suggest on of the models in the TI-30 series .  This is the calculator required for dual enrollment pre-calculus and is the only one students are allowed to use on the CVCC portions of their tests and exams.  It is widely available (Walmart, Staples, Wallgreens) and costs $9.99-$13.99.  We will continue working on trig this week ( Chapter 8) and students will be taking notes and doing their assignments in their Trig Composition Books.  Quiz Thursday on square roots, Pythagorean Th. and Special Right Triangles (Ch 8.1-8.2) On Thursday we will start working with trig ratios and will be using the calculator to "solve" right triangles.  Walk-in help: 8:15 on Tues., Wed.,and Thurs.; 3:40 on Mon., Tues., and Wed.

Week of Jan 9-13: We will finish section 7.2, have a short quiz Tues on ratio and proportions, and then spend time reviewing for the exam. Exams are Jan13, 17 and 18. (Zero period exams are Jan 11 & 12 during zero period).  Your 3rd period geometry exam is next Tuesday Jan. 17. We will have an hour "study period" followed by the exam, which will take 2 hours.  It will have 50 multiple choice (no calculator) and about 15-20 "free response" questions (with calculator.)  There will be a formal proof.  The Re-Quiz on constructions will be given Wed. at 3:40 and Thurs. @ 8:25.  You will not be able to use your notes on the re-quiz.  If you take the re-quiz, that grade will count, and the original quiz grade will be thrown out.  Walk-in Help: Thurs @ 8:15; Wed. and Thurs at 3:40.

Welcome to Pre-AP Geometry!!      2011-2012      Mrs. Frisa           Room 3006

Pre-AP Geometry goes beyond the “minimum cocompetenciesefined and tested by the state geometry SOL’SOL bsp; You will also be expected to demonstrate a deeper understanding of geometric concepts than can be tested on multiple choice tests like the SOL’s, to memorize formulas, to perform basic arithmetic and algebraic tasks without a calculator, and to master about half of the state Standards of Learning for Trigonometry (there is no SOL test for Trig).   Many of you plan to take AP Statistics and/or AP Calculus in high school; this course is specifically designed to provide the background you will need for success in these courses and the advanced math courses that lead up to them.

Parent Portal is a great way to keep up with what is going on in class.  Parents, please sign up, if you haven’t already!

Supplies

1.   A spiral graph-paper notebook (Staples, Walmart, Office Max) for class notes and homework

2.   Ruler (with both inches and centimeters), protractor, and pencil compass

3.   A scientific (SIN, COS, TAN buttons) or graphing calculator.  I have a few I can assign students to use for the year.

4.   Red pens for grading homework, etc

5.   A stitched together “marble” composition book for trigonometry.

6.   Bag of small, individually wrapped candies for “rewards” and/or box of tissues (optional, but greatly appreciated)

Class Rules

1.  Be on time; be prepared; be considerate.      2. Participate fully.      3. No “outside” food/beverages other than water.

Grading Scale

 Pre-AP courses use the county’s standard “7-point” scale, but they are weighted: A=4.5, B=3.5, etc.

Homework will determine 10% of the nine-weeks grade.    Plan on about 30 minutes per day.

1.  The weekly schedule is posted on http://new.schoolnotes.com/students/searchTeacher  by 8:55 on Mondays.

     Daily assignments (including snow-day assignments) will be posted by 5:00 p.m. the daily.

2.  Do all homework in your graph-paper notebook.  Answers without supporting calculations/work are not acceptable.

3.   Use your calculator ONLY on problems where the text or teacher specifically directs you to do so.

      Do not use your calculator routinely for basic arithmetic calculations or to graph simple functions!

4.   Working together is fine, as long as each person does all of the assigned work; copying homework is cheating.

5.   If you have trouble with your assignment (there is a 20 minute frustration limit!) send me an email or see me before school.   Otherwise, your homework will be graded on the basis of what is in your notebook when class begins:

      2=all problems honestly attempted, 1= at least half complete, or 0= less than half complete.

6.   If a student fails repeatedly to complete homework assignments, parents will be contacted and detention assigned.

Test, Quizzes, Projects, etc.

You will generally have two big tests per grading period, along with occasional projects, and frequent announced quizzes, including vocabulary and homework/notebook quizzes.  (Five-minute warm-up quizzes do not have to be made up.)

Extra Help/Extra credit

If you miss class, want to study together for an upcoming test or quiz, or need help for any other reason, please talk to me about coming in for extra help either before or after school.  I am available without appointment between 8:15 and 8:50 most mornings, and will try to let you know ahead of time when I have other obligations before school.

Extra credit problems are often included on tests and quizzes, and we will occasionally have “challenge problems.”
