Homework for Friday, May 2, 2008 You've worked hard on your Anne Frank unit, so take a well-deserved break and enjoy the weekend. (Be rested and ready for some new things next week!) Our focus will be on Anne Frank this entire week. Each day we will be reading a scene together in class; what we don't finish in class you will be completing for homework. You will also be filling out the page in your Anne Frank packet that corresponds to that scene for that particular day. Your completed packets are due on Friday; you will be having a final quest on The Diary of Anne Frank on Friday as well. Be sure to have your vocabulary (back side of page 2 in your packet) completed for Thursday as we will be going over those 15 words in preparation for the quest. Specific homework for: Monday, April 28, 2008 - Act 2 Scene 1 Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - Act 2 Scene 2 Wednesday, April 30, 2008 - Act 2 Scene 3 and be sure vocabulary is completed for tomorrow Thursday, May 1, 2008 - Act 2 Scenes 4 and 5 and study for tomorrow's quest Extra Credit Opportunities ***Brand New!!*** The Farmington Valley Environmental Festival committee is looking for POSTERS created by students that contain poetry, essays, paintings, drawings, photography and/or mixed media that focus on favorite outdoor places in the Farmington Valley. If you are so inclined, I have more details about the contest (all entries are due by May 8, 2008), so please see me. You will receive extra credit for whatever medium you choose - just show me your entry to receive your extra credit. 1. Go to the new link #10 below - click on it for Grammar Girl's latest tidbits about tricky grammar rules. Write down what you learned, have a parent/guardian sign it, and bring it in for extra credit. 2. Go to the link, "What Kind of World Do You Want?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Every day you can answer a new "Official SAT question of the day" by clicking on the link below. Fill in the chart that you received in class each day that you do this; after 10 days bring the form in to me and I'll be HAPPY to award you extra credit. (You don't have to get the answers correct - I just want you to try them and get used to them. You'll be amazed how much you already know!!) 4. Check Attachment #1 for topics that KIDZ Magazine is looking for - in their upcoming issues. Write something up, let me see it for extra credit and if it gets accepted . . . then you actually get paid for it. This is a "no-brainer" - a "win-win" situation - you get extra credit automatically and you might even get paid! 5. FLOcabulary! Write a couplet using one of your vocabulary words as demonstrated in class today. Keep the beat/rap rhythm in mind as you write the couplet. Remember that the first line should contain the word and its definition; the second line needs to rhyme and add to the meaning of the word. Use this one as an example: When Scrooge was churlish, nasty and rude, We told him to change his crude attitude. For every two couplets you write, you will earn an extra credit coupon. * Once you have earned 10 extra credit coupons for Flocabulary, you can only earn 1 per week from then on.* The performance of the Flocabulary couplets will be optional, but strongly encouraged as they are so much fun and such a great way for everyone to learn the words. 6. Start noticing your vocabulary words being used in the "real world"! Whenever you hear or read one of the words write it down on the Vocab Detection sheet; once you have 10 sightings, turn the sheet in for an extra credit coupon. 7. Type up an impressive paragraph detailing something that you do "Outside" of school for our "Outside Wall of Fame" bulletin board. Possibilities include: sports, music, drama, community service, family projects, travel, passions, . . . Type it up, include a photo if you have one, and hand it into my Extra Credit basket on my computer desk. I will read it, award you with a sticker and coupon (if it is "worthy"), and display the paragraph on our special bulletin board for all to read. 8. Write a review of a book you've read on a large index card (please get one from the wooden box on the window shelf in our room). Follow the format of one of the student recommended book cards (also on the window shelf in our room). Hand it into my Extra Credit basket on my computer desk. I will read it and award you with a sticker and coupon, if it is well done. More to come - stay tuned.
