The 4 Square Writing Method What is it? The 4 Square Writing Method is a tool teachers will use to teach writing skills. It is a visual aid that develops prewriting and organizational skills, as well as better focused, more detailed writing. Why use it? It can be used across grade levels, curriculum areas, and with various forms of composition. It helps students organize their thoughts into one coherent piece of writing. It gives students a tool to use that will promote confidence in their writing. How will it be used? Teachers will use the 4 Square Writing Method to instruct students in planning their writing. The 4 Square will be used as part of the 5 Step Writing Process, when students must plan and organize their work prior to drafting. Students will use the 4 Square as a graphic organizer for many different types of activities and writing assignments. Depending on the grade level, the information put into a 4 Square can then be transferred into a written composition. 4 Square will also help teachers assess students' writing and organizational skills. Look for some outstanding writing this year! |
