Third Grade GATE Update
The third grade GATE students have been learning all about inventions. They started this unit by researching a particular invention or inventor, and then creating a poster, brochure or Power Point presentation to show what they learned.
After their research, students began studying simple machines. They learned about the pulley, lever, wheel and axle, wedge, screw and inclined plane, and how they make work easier. Students then used their knowledge if simple machines to create a Rube Goldberg-style contraption (to see examples of Rube Goldberg's work, visit www.RubeGoldberg.com).
In December and January, the third grade GATE students will be learning all about the invention process. After learning about this process, students will put it in to action by creating their very own, original inventions! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fourth Grade GATE Update
The fourth grade GATE students are hard at work learning all about advertising. They started this unit by choosing a brand (such as Coca Cola, Hershey, or Crayola) and researching the history of the brand. Students created a poster, brochure, or Power Point to teach their classmates about the brand's history.
Students then began learning all about print advertisements--they studied the parts of a print ad, various layouts for print ads, and the strategies often used in print ads. Students also learned about target audience, and redesigned a cereal box to target a specific demographic and psychographic.
In December and January, students will be using what they have learned to create their own ad campaigns!
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Fifth Grade GATE Update
The fifth grade GATE students have been busy learning about and solving mysteries. They started this unit by learning about the elements of mystery stories, and then reading a solving a variety of short msyteries. Students learned about a unique type of mystery called a "Story with Holes". These stories actually contain none of the typical mystery story elements. Instead, readers must ask yes or no questions to gather clues to solve the mystery. Students wrote their own Stories with Holes which can be read on the GATE website!
Next, students began learning about a variety of forensic science skills. They have studied handwriting analysis and fingerprinting. In the coming weeks, they will learn how crime solvers can use art, chromatography, and footprints to help solve mysteries. In January, students will be presented with a mystery; they will need to use all of the forensic science skills they have learned to solve the case of "Who Bribed the Art Teacher."
