Orca Team Social Studies

First Quarter

August 25th-October 29th

Progress Reports will be given out on September 29th

 

 

First Quarter Unit of Study will be the Continent of Africa. 

Classes will focus on the African Continent and the different regions of Africa beginning with Northern Africa and Egypt. 

We will begin a two week review of the Five Themes of Geography and the Seven Continents,Latitude and Longitude. Project will be done in groups on the Five Themes of Geography. A poster will be completed in class on this topic. Look for a rubrics to be sent home next Wednesday, Thurday(September 2-A Block and September 3 -B Block

Students will then begin the Study of Africa on Weeks Three and Four. Focus will be on the Key Physical Features of the Different regions.(NCSCS 1.01, 1.02 ,1.03) 

 

The Focus is on the Different Regions, Ethnic Groups, and Climates of Africa. Students will focus on the impact that the physical features and environmental, social institutions have on the people and culture of Africa's countries.  (Maps, Vocabulary and reading of text ,videos, and a project will be the guided practice for this unit)

Weeks 5-9 Egypt and the Egyptian Civilization will be the focus of study.

Hieroglyphics, Culture, Achievements of the Egyptians, along with the Geography of the Nile River Valley will be the focus of study.  Students will write in hieroglyphics and create their own pyramid. 

Students will complete a project on the Seven Ancient Wonders of the United States as compared to the Seven Ancient Wonders of Egyptian History. NCSCS objectives 1.01, 8.01 which is key historical people will the study of this unit. 

 

The famous people will be King Tut, Ramses II, Thutmose III, Nefertiti, Cleopatra, and Imhotep. 

Key studies will be on the discovery of King Tut's Tomb and Howard Carter's discovery in 1921.

Open House is September 14th at 7 pm at West Rowan Middle School.
