Mrs. Murphy's Classroom

Welcome to Kindergarten!

KINDERGARTEN MASSThe Kindergarten students did a fantastic job hosting the Mass Wednesday.  I was so proud of them!

SPIRIT DAY:  On Friday, May 18th, the students will be participating in Spirit Day at Ridge Park. They are to wear WHITE shirts and gym shoes.    Please check the weather and dress accordingly.  I know there are a few students who did not order Subway, please make sure those students bring a drink and a lunch in a brown bag.

GRADUATION DAY: The students will be graduating on TUESDAY, MAY 29th at 10:00 am in the Church.  The students are to come to school that day at the regular time (8:15am) dressed in their Sunday best!  After the ceremony, there will be a small reception in the Parish Center for all of the graduates and their families.  This will be their LAST DAY of school.  The students will go home with their parents after the reception.

Guest Readers:  WE ARE IN NEED OF GUEST READERS.  A new schedule is up on the board just inside the Kindergarten doors.  Guest readers are on Mondays, but if that doesn't work, you may let me know when you would like to come in.

READING This week we continued to learn all about the letter Zz.  We brainstormed words that begin with the letter Zz.  We learned to recognize the letter Zz as well as learned the sound for Zz and the correct formation of Zz.  There are several different skills covered in this book.   Please continue to practice printing Zz at home.  The students read a story in their letter book.  They are doing a great job decoding words.  We worked on comprehension skills as well as discussing the main idea, setting, and characters in the story.  Please make sure they read this story to you and other family members.  We have also been working hard on spelling our sight words.  The students are doing a wonderful job during Phonemic awareness.  Have them show you some of the ways they blend and chop words.  We have also been working on counting the syllables in words.   Each week the students will learn 1or 2 new sight words.  The sight word book this week was Summer.   Please continue to practice reading and writing all the sight words every night.  The students are REALLY enjoying playing the sight word game in class.

RELIGION:  This week we discussed different Bible stories.  We have been talking a lot about about Mary as we prepared for the May Crowning.  We are also learning the prayer Angel of God, The Our Father, and The Hail Mary.  Please continue to practice these prayers at home.  We continue to go to Mass on Wednesdays with our 8th grade buddies.  I am so proud of how well they are saying their prayers during Mass.

MATH:  This week we continue the chapter on subtraction.  We discussed the difference between adding and taking away of numbers.  We will be using manipulatives to help with this concept.  You may want to use cheerios, fruit loops, etc. in order to practice this concept.  Please practice printing numbers at home.  Please continue to work on number recognition from 1-20 at home too.  We have been working hard on counting by 10's to 100 and 5's to 100.  Please practice counting at home.

WRITER'S WORKSHOP - The students have completed a few "Four Square" writing activities.  This is the beginning step in writing a paragraph when they get older.  This helps the students think of supporting details when writing.  The students have been doing a great job in writers workshop.  The students are doing a wonderful job blending words and writing a simple sentence.  They are working on using capital letters, correct spacing, and periods.  They are writing completely on their own.  Some just draw pictures and others are writing words.  Please encourage writing at home.

CENTERS:
The students love center time.  The students are doing very well in their guided reading groups.  I am so proud of how well they are ALL reading.

If you have any questions at all, please send an email and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  My email is donnamurphyk2@gmail.com  Please check this School Notes page on Fridays and you will learn all about our week in Kindergarten.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Mother's Day!!
Blessings,
Mrs. Murphy
