Happy New Year!

**NOTE**As of Jan. 16th, I will no longer be using schoolnotes.com. Porter will now be using FUSION, which allows teachers to have their own classroom page right on the Porter Website! This will make life easier for everyone! Please have patience as I adjust to the new format. **

Monday, January 12th, 2009

This morning in math we completed our morning math and reviewed 1)how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers 2)how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. It is important to be able to do this when adding and subtractions mixed numbers with unlike denominators. It is also crucial to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers as final answers, as improper fractions are not in simplest form. There are now many, many steps to solving these problems and students tend to jump ahead of themselves when computing their answers. Continue to encourage them to work slowly and with attention to the detail within each step to ensure accuracy. Their notebooks went home with them tonight for additional support on their homework.

In Language Arts we had a class meeting about our new project...creating thinking map placements for our School of Excellence breakfast. This is a big honor for our classroom and we are all very excited about it! We brainstormed traits that make Porter a School of Excellence. We spent the rest of our LA period working on our 2nd quarter writing prompt, which will be finished for Wednesday at the end of the LA period.

In Science, we were able to SEE how light bends and reflects. We played with prisms, flashlights, and mirrors. We watched the prisms display ROY G. BIV and made the light from the flashlight dance while playing with the mirrors. It was so fun! We also reviewed transparent, translucent, and opaque and took a quick check.

Tonight for homework:
L.A.-- MLK Jr. Reading/pick one of his famous quotes and write one paragraph about WHY you picked it and what it means to you.
Math-- Adding/subtraction fractions (use notes to help you!)
Science--NONE (they have "Quick Check" written in their agenda, but we took it this afternoon).
Social Studies--None

CFAs:

*Fractions-Jan 23rd

OUR NEXT BOOK REPORT IS DUE JANUARY 16th!!

Reminders:
(PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!0
**PLEASE sign your child's agenda each and every night (including weekends...just Friday is fine). It is their responsibility to bring it to you, but your support is appreciated and encouraged. It is important that we are all on the same page in your child's education and I appreciate all you do. Signing the agenda lets the student know you and I both know what is going on at school. Also, feel free to jot me notes, questions, concerns, etc. Thank you!

Please do not email me directly from schoolnotes.com, the link to the Prince William County email does not seem to be working. Cut and paste salvasme@pwcs.edu into your address. Hopefully that will get all emails to me without an additional problems or confusion!
The math magic web site is: http://www.westirondequoit.org/rogers/schaumbergweb/oswego%20city%20school%20district%20math%20games.htm

Keep practicing your math facts! :)
