Twenty-two North Rowan Middle School students exhibited their recycled art at the Trash to Treasure Show, on November 5, 2009, at Corriher-Lipe Middle School.  The  show was such a success that  it will remain up through November 12 for the Rowan Salisbury Principals' Meeting!  The Salisbury Post sent a reporter and a photographer.  One student and his family was interviewed and  photographed.  Keep your fingers crossed that there will be an article in the Post about one of  North Rowan Middle's student!

I am ready to submit the Sukura Cray Paz Contest.

PTA Reflections are due to me by November 17!  Please see me for more information!

Mariana Camacho won 2nd Place in the state of North Carolina for the National School Bus Safety Contest.

The NCDOT emailed me to say that they have received our entries in the Work Zone Safety Poster Contest.  We hope to hear some good news, soon.

The Marzetti Caramel Apple Dip Packaging Design Contest entries have been mailed.  I think that we had several strong contenders.

Our first project was a Recycled Art project.  Students were to take something that would be thrown away and transform it into a work of art.

There will be an Art Show, " Trash to Treasures."  sponsored  by the Middle and High School Art Teachers, at 4:00 pm on November 5, at Corriher-Lipe Middle School.  The show is free and open to the public.  Several North Rowan Middle School students will have art on display.

The second project was a poster contest sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  Students were asked to design a poster about safety in work zones.  The theme, "DO YOUR PART," was included in the design.  Students learned how to draw and shade cones and barrels, how to draw the human body in correct proportion, and how to draw highways in 1-Point Perspective.  Entries had to have the theme, a highway scene, cones and/or barrels, cars, road work machines, and full sized, correctly proportioned workmen.

The third project was a package design for Marzetti's Old Fashioned Caramel Dip.  We went on the Internet and downloaded an entry form and a design template.  The design must be done on the template and uploaded to the web site,
www.uDipSweepstakes. com.  We analyzed the current Marzetti packaging and the LiteHouse packaging (the competition!).  We did sketches and chose our best ideas and then drew them in proportion to the size of the template.

The fourth project is the Cray-Paz Art Contest.  Students may choose the subject and learn how to use Cray-Paz Oil Pastels to express their art.  Students will learn about different ways to use oil pastels, and the importance of color schemes.

The fifth project will be the PTA Reflections Program.  This  year the theme is "Beauty is..."  The program is open to all the North Rowan Middle School students, not just the art students.  Students will begin with a writing assignment about what beauty is  and how their entry will best express that theme.  This year, everyone has to write an artist's statement.
Students can do creative writing, art, photography, musical composition, dance choreography, or write and direct a short DVD film.  See Mrs. Alexander for all the rules and entry forms.

This spring Mrs. Alexander nominated six NRMS art students to compete for three slots in a Summer Artist-in Residence program at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center.  Three very talented students took part, and their art is on exhibit at Waterworks, 123 East Liberty Street, Salisbury, through November 7, 2009.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Last year Mrs. Alexander's classes entered the National School Bus Safety Contest.  We had a student to win second for the state of North Carolina!
