5th Grade Mathematics

Our 5th grade math curriculum expands on the four operations as applied to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.  Variable and algebraic expressions are introduced and there are units dedicated to the exploration of geometry, measurements, percentages, and understanding and interpreting graphs.  Critical thinking skills and understanding the math behind the math are emphasized in this class, as well as computational skills.  This course provides a foundation for students to transition into the more structured mathematical thinking required in 6th grade.

May 21-24
Students will explore the metric system as well as customary units of measure, perimeter and area.

6th Grade Mathematics

In 6th grade we continue with elementary mathematical concepts and transition into more structured thinking.  We focus on the rational number system, algebra, geometry, probability, number sense, and number theory.  Problem solving is an important theme in the 6th grade curriculum, as is speaking and writing mathematically.  This course provides the foundation for students to transition from thinking concretely to more abstractly in 7th grade.

May 21-24
Students will continue their exploration of geometry focusing on areas of circles, circumference, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones.

Pre-Algebra

This course introduces students to the real number system and provides problem solving opportunities.   Students continue to strengthen their ability to communicate verbally and in writing their general mathematical understanding and they are encouraged to move from the specific to the general through algebraic and geometric representations.  Strategies for independent and successful understanding of new math concepts are emphasized.  This course provides the foundation for abstract mathematics presented in Algebra.

May 21-24
Students will have an assessment on Monday and then begin chapter 10 on Tuesday. We will be exploring multi-step equations.

Algebra

This course focuses on families of functions, with special emphasis on linear and quadratic functions.  Students learn to represent the functions in multiple ways, including verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs.  They also learn to explore systems of equations and inequalities, properties of polynomials, as well as exponential and radical functions.  The text provides many features designed to help students learn and study effectively.

May 21-24
Students will be given a final exam packet.  We will review chapters 1-2 on Monday,3-7 on Tuesday, 8-10 on Wednesday.  Students will take an in-class practice final on Thursday.
