Welcome to Middle School Religion

St. Mary of the Mills

Mrs. Tiffani James

Third Quarter

8th Grade

As you know, our 8th grade Confirmandi will have a very special Celebrant for their Confirmation Mass.  Archbishop Wurel will be visiting our parish and celebrating Mass with us on that special day.  Students in the 8th grade will be preparing for Confirmation by completing a four part Catechetical Unit.

Students will be developing a deeper understanding of:

·         The Church

·         Baptism and Confirmation

·         The Eucharist

·         Life of Faith in Christ

All students in 8th grade will learn about and be tested on the information presented in the aforementioned units.  The unit grades, and a small number of additional projects, will be the chief components of the 3rd Quarter grade.

The students are excited about receiving the final Sacrament of Initiation. They hope that their family, friends, and classmates will be able to join them on May 23rd and May 24th as they complete this important step in the life of their faith.

7th Grade Update

Students in the 7th grade will study the Parables of Jesus during the 3rd Quarter. The students will be able to:

  • Recognize Parables unique to Luke
  • Describe major themes of the Gospel of Luke
  • Identify the role and significance of women in the Gospel of Luke.

Students in 7th grade will also be preparing for the Confirmation Test.  All students are required to complete all preparatory units and to take the final Confirmation test.  The units and the test will be the chief components of the 3rd Quarter Grade.

6th Grade Update:

Students in 6th grade will continue a study of the Gospel of Matthew.  The students will be focusing on the Parables and will be able to:

  • Show understanding that the author of the Gospel of Matthew was writing for a Jewish Christian community challenged to welcome Gentiles.
  • Recognize that Matthew rearranges the teaching of Jesus into five discourses to highlight Jesus as bringing to fulfillment of the five books of the Torah
  • Give examples in the narrative of the Gospel of Matthew that show the literary device of conflict to tell the story
  • State that Jesus is the central figure of the Gospel of Matthew whose genealogy is linked with son of Abraham, son of David and Son of God
  • Identify the main characters in the Gospel of Matthew and their purpose
  • Identify the Gospel of Matthew as a synoptic gospel containing most of the Gospel of Mark
  • Show understanding of the infancy narrative as identifying Jesus as Emmanuel taken from the Book of Isaiah
  • State use of conflict and discourse in the temptation story to identify Jesus as Son of God who seeks no power for himself
  • Describe the beginning of Jesus' ministry in Capernaum, the call of the first disciples and his first ministry
  • State how Jesus challenges his disciples to be salt and light.
  • State how Matthew views the conditions of discipleship
