The Ellington High School Physical Education Program educates all students to their highest academic/physical potential with a focus on the principles of sportsmanship, wellness and physical fitness to lead a physically active lifestyle.

A student at Ellington High School must pass two semesters of physical education in order to satisfy his/her graduation requirement.  Students are expected to be prepared and to participate to the best of their ability.

ATTENDANCE:

Students must be in the gymnasium at the sound of the bell or else they will be considered tardy to class.  They then have an additional 5 minutes after the final bell to be dressed and ready for activity.  The first three unexcused tardies will equal one unexcused absence.  Each additional unexcused tardy will result in an unexcused absence.  A class cut will be handled as stated in the Student Handbook.  A class cut cannot be made up.

The school nurse will confirm excusing notes from doctors or parents.  Please see the nurse PRIOR TO CLASS.

DRESS:

Ordinary dress requirements for physical education class will be shorts, sweats, and T-shirts (NO TANK TOPS).  PE clothing must be separate from what is worn to school.  All choices of PE clothing must be consistent with the Ellington Board of Education dress code.

Proper footwear (sneakers) must have a rubber non-marking sole, give adequate support and be without a heel.

Course Specific Learning Goals:

-          Students will demonstrate the affective, cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.

-          Students will demonstrate competency in many motor skills and proficiency in a few motor skills and movement patterns.

-          Students will understand and apply rules, terminology, and strategies in activities, games and competitions.

-          Students will apply safe practices and procedures in all physical activity settings.

-          Students will accept the role and decisions of an official.

-          Students will demonstrate responsible personal and social behaviors in physical activity settings.

-          Students will assess physical fitness status in terms of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility.

-          Students will recognize the influence physical activity can have in fostering an appreciation of cultural differences, as well as gender, physical and age difference.

-          Students will understand that physical activity can provide enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.

Students with a medical excuse will be assigned a daily article review.

If the student has a prolonged medical excuse, the student will be assigned an alternative class activity or a term paper/project.

Article reviews must be turned in each time a student is absent from class (see your teacher for article review rubric).
