Welcome to the School Notes Page of the Special Education Department!

The school year is winding down but we still have many events!!

May 25th- No School Memorial Day

May 21st- Early Dismissal

June 5th- Field Day

Summer school forms are due.  Please make sure that the paperwork has been returned to the office.  Summer school runs July 6th through July 31st.

Students will be taking their end of the year assessments these next few weeks including the DRP, DRA, reading comprehension, writing prompt and math.



The following are some helpful ideas when working with your child at home.


Homework

Homework can be a difficult event at home. The following are some recommendations to achieve success.

-Set a regular time/routine

-Choose a regular quiet place with lots of light,

supplies nearby

-Remove all distractions

-Be available to help you child

-Look over completed assignments

-Monitor television viewing

Writing

Many students have a difficult time writing. The following are some suggestions to promote writing taken from the "Misunderstood Minds" series on PBS.

1. Create a safe writing evironment.

2. Make sure the directions are clear.

3. Evaluate mechanics and content seperately.

4. Free write.

5. Vary writing activities.

6. Provide enough time.

7. Allow time for editing and revising.



It is important for students to remember that we all have strengths and weaknesses. Writing may not be an easy task. Writing is a process and it is necessary to edit and revise to continuously improve a written piece.
