PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT COURSE OUTLINE

                        Mr. Stiles  mstiles@ellingtonschools.net

The Ellington High School PE department seeks to educate all students to their academic & physical potential with a focus on the principles of sportsmanship, rules interpretation, motor skill development and physical fitness, encouraging students to lead a physically active lifestyle.

A student at Ellington High School must pass two semesters of physical education in order to satisfy his/her graduation requirement.  Students are expected to be prepared and to participate to the best of their ability.

ATTENDANCE

Students must be in the gymnasium at the sound of the bell or they will be considered tardy to class.  The first three unexcused tardies will equal one unexcused absence.  Each additional unexcused tardy will result in an unexcused absence.  Course credit will be withheld after 11 absences.  A class cut cannot be made up and will be handled as stated in the Student Handbook.

DRESS

Students will be given 5 minutes at the beginning and end of class to use the locker rooms.  Dress requirements for physical education class will be shorts, sweats, and T-shirts (NO TANK TOPS).  Proper footwear (sneakers) must have a rubber non-marking sole, give adequate support (laces tied snuggly) and be without a heel.  PE clothing must be separate from what is worn to school.  All choices of PE clothing must be consistent with the Ellington Board of Education dress code.

 Course Specific Learning Goals:

-          Students will assess physical fitness status in terms of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility.

-          Students will recognize the influence physical activity can have in fostering an appreciation of cultural differences, as well as gender, physical and age difference.

-          Students will understand that physical activity can provide enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.
