Welcome to 5th Grade !!!
“2007 – 2008”

Educational Leaders……
Mrs. Evans
Mrs. Lewis
Mrs. Johnson
Mr. Hurtado

Welcome Parents, Family and Students,

As a team, we are eager and ready for a great year! In order to achieve the success that we envision, we ask for your complete and total participation in educating your child. This year your child will be challenged by various assignments and projects. In order to prepare them for Middle School be responsible for turning in all work on time. Parent notes for late work are only accepted in extreme emergencies. Some tips to help your child:
1. Encourage student to maintain neatly organized notes. Study notes every night.

2. Review basic math skills and vocabulary
every night.

3. Read and log readings
(Read at least 30 min. every night)

4. Check “school notes” for communications and assignment deadlines.
We look forward to meeting and working with you and your child.
5th Grade Teachers

Grading Scale:
100 – 90 A
89 – 80 B
79 – 70 C
69 – 60 D
59 – under E

Your student’s grade is determined by:

Classwork/Participation: 35%
Homework: 15%
Test, Quizzes, and Projects: 50%

Students will be given yellow “Friday Folders”. Every other Friday, your child will bring this folder home. This folder will include graded tests, quizzes, and assignments. In order to ensure that you receive the folder, please empty the folder and review and sign the weekly BAR (Behavior &Academic Review) sheet found in the front cover of the folder. Please do not remove sheet from folder. Teachers will remove and file them at the end of each quarter. Weekly reading logs must also be returned in folders. All folders must be returned on Mondays. Folders returned after Tuesday will receive a “ZERO”.

Absences:

Occasionally, students must miss class due to illness. By state law, excessive unexcused absences/tardies must be reported. Please send written excuses for all absences. Students are required to make up all missed work.
Students also miss class on occasion for early dismissal, band or chorus. Students are excused from class, but are required to make up missed work. For all assignments check Schnotes.com.
Please be advised that the student has as many days as they were absent to make up the assignment. For example: If student misses 1 day they have 1 day to make up the work missed.

The 5th grade team plans to provide effective education. In Science, we will extend experiments, enrich lessons, and explore various areas of interest. In order to achieve this goal, we are asking each parent to pay a Science Lab Fee of $10.00 for the year. This fee will be used for additional materials needed.

Agenda Books ($5.00) may be purchased from school. These are excellent tools to assist in recording homework assignments and managing due dates for assignments and tests. Parent/Teacher can also be conducted through the agenda books.

Students in Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Lewis’ classes will be assigned lockers. Due to a limited number, 2 students will share each locker. Please label all personal items. Do not bring valuable items to school. Students are responsible for all items left in lockers. Since lockers are a privilege, any student caught abusing this privilege will have their locker taken.
Students in Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Hurtado’s classes use coat racks. Please keep these areas neat. Hang all coats and bookbags. Neatly stack all books on the shelves.

We are ready to work with you and look forward to meeting you on “Back To School Night”!

Sincerely,

5th Grade Team

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

PROBLEM: STUDENTS ARE LOSING/MISPLCING MATH AND SCIENCE TEXT BOOKS.

SOLUTION: ALONG WITH MY CONSTANT REMINDERS, TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT WAYS TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR MATERIALS. A FEE IS ASSESSED FOR LOST TEXT BOOKS IN ORDER TO REPLACE THEM.

PROBLEM: STUDENTS ARE NOT COMPLETING HOMEWORK.

SOLUTION: WHEN TIME ALLOWS, I GIVE STUDENTS TIME TO START IN CLASS. BUT HOMEWORK IS GIVEN EVERY NIGHT. EVEN IF YOUR CHILD SAYS THAT IT IS COMPLETE, CHECK THEIR WORK TO ENSURE IT IS COMPLETE.

THANKS FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP!

MRS. EVANS

---------------------------------------------

Parents,

Your child has been given log on information for:

Study Island and First in Math

Encourage your child to visit these sites at home
to reinforce basic math skills and lessons taught in class. On some nights, Study Island / First in Math
will be assigned for homework. If you do not have access to the internet, your child will have a worksheet that will also reinforce lessons taught in class. You do not need to print anything as proof of completed homework, I am able to check online.

QUIZZES ARE GIVEN WEEKLY IN MATH. HELP YOUR CHILD TO PREPARE BY VISITING THE MATH WEBSITES: STUDY ISLAND.COM AND FIRST IN MATH.COM. YOU CAN ALSO HELP THEM PREPARE BY REVIEWING AND COMPLETING THE EXTRA PRACTICE SECTIONS IN THE BACK OF THE TEXT BOOKS THAT COINCIDE WITH THE LESSONS THAT WE HAVE WORKED ON IN CLASS.

THINGS NEEDED FOR CLASS:

COPY PAPER
TREATS/SMALL TOYS FOR INCENTIVES
HAND SANITIZER
