Welcome Cougars to English II, 
World Literature

The reading in this class will include literature from various continents and countries around the world. Events impacting different cultures will be examined. Students will analyze the literature and cultures, and then compare and contrast selected pieces.  

Vocabulary, grammar, and writing are integral parts of the course, and they will be covered throughout the course.

Vocabulary is the study of word parts to include prefixes, suffixes, and bases as well as words they create. Students are to learn meanings, uses and spelling in vocabulary.

Student's grammar will be assessed, and the grammar taught will be focused on helping students avoid common errors. Errors commonly seen include sentence fragments, and the lack of agreement between various parts of a sentence. Students will be given practice to help them better understand the construction and rules of the English language.

A writing test is given during March for all students classified as sophomores. Students will be taught how to write a formal essay.  Formal writing will be required when students write their Graduation Research Paper during their Junior year.

In preparation for the writing test students will be asked to journal frequently and to write several essays during this class. The types of writing will include extended definition, and cause and effect 

Students will write introductions that include a hook, or an  attention getting first sentence, background information, and then a thesis which includes a statement of their topic, their opinion about that topic, and the limit of the extent to which the topic will be covered.

Several body paragraphs are required to cover the essay and the beginning sentence in each paragraph must be a topic sentence. Details and examples must be provided in each paragraph to support the topic.

Their conclusion must briefly summarize the points they have made, restate the thesis in new wording, and leave the reader with a final thought.
