Dear Families,
Here we are almost in mid January. Our Second Quarter Report Cards will be sent home on Tuesday, January 31st. Please take time to share this information with your child as well as my comments. I have asked that some of you contact me for conferences. If I did not check the box it means I didn't find it necessary at this time. However, if YOU feel the need to meet/discuss your child's progress then please call me at school: (704) 216-0273. I am very pleased with most of our student's progress and a bit concerned for a few.
We are also going to be cranking up the Math Facts this month. In March students will be competing boys v/girls and classes v/other Second Grade classes. We are doing this in an attempt to get out students to memorize their Math Facts to 18. As I stated from our first Parent Conferences we can be more successful with your help. If you will spend a few minutes each night going through Math Flash Cards (Addition and Subtraction to 18) your child will become much more proficient. All it takes is a few cards a night until they are memorized. We (students included) are very excited about this. We want your child to be prepared for next year and beyond.
Remember, together we can make a difference. If you make time to read with and to your children and oversee their Homework (making them correct mistakes on their own), then they will achieve success.
We are striving to be strong, capable writers who can stick to the main idea and use details to help develop a sound story with paragraphs. We will also be starting to use Transition Words such as first, next, later, then, finally, etc.
Parents, please also see that your child is reading every night in a quiet area away from distractions such as t.v. for a minimum of 15 minutes. Check to see that they are reading fluently and comprehending what they read.
We have been enjoying our study of Martin Luther King, Jr. this week. We will continue our study next week as well. I plan on incorporating more Reader's Theatre practice with our students next week. This helps with their fluency and also builds confidence in their reading.
Thank you for your support thus far. Together we will achieve!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Alfieri
