FIRST GRADE NEWS

 WE ARE LEARNING:

RELIGION-In Unit 4, the children will learn that in the sacrament of the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. They will learn about what we say and do at Mass. The children will learn how we can share God's love. They will also learn about Mary and the ways in which we honor her and the saints. They also will learn that we are to care for all of God's creation.

MATH- The children will read and write numbers through 100. They will compare and order numbers. They will recognize odd and even numbers and skip count by 2's and 5's. They will continue to solve problems using logical reasoning.

READING- We begin Level 5 which has stories about great ideas.. We will read stories that tell what a difference a great idea can make. We continue to read orally and practice our comprehension skills. We also are learning research and study skills. We will identify characters, settings, and plots. We will review sequence, and compare and contrast.

LANGUAGE ARTS- The children will learn about sentences that are commands and exclamations. They will also learn about pronouns. The children will learn the vowels sounds in how, out, book and moon, boy and saw. They will also learn the prefixes un- and re-.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Unit 4 introduces the children to our Earth and its resources, and identifies and describes physical characteristics of places such as landforms, bodies of water, and weather.

SCIENCE- In chapter 6 "Land, Water, and Air, the children will discover what makes up the Earth and how people can help protect the Earth. In Chapter 7 "Weather" the children will discover what tools are used to measure weather and the four seasons.
