                                     2011-2012

November News:

1.  Information about our Fundraiser for Funds for Laptops was emailed to parents on Monday, Oct. 31st.  An order form was attached to the email.  The deadline for orders or donations is Friday, Nov. 18th.  Cash or check must be turned in with all orders.  DVD - $10, Poster Photo Collage - $8 or Cd - $5.  No door to door sells.  Family members will enjoy this keepsake of our archaeological dig!

2.  Students are busy working on revising the rough drafts of their research papers on famous archaeologists.  I believe you will be proud of the final papers!

3.  Next, students will begin creating products to show what they learned and to teach others!  Many products have been selected: flipcharts, posters, board games, interviews, skits, etc.  Students will create the products in EXCEL but may need to bring some materials from home depending on the product selected by their research team.  Students need to begin thinking of things they may need.  We will need these in class next week - November 7-11th for Oak Grove students.  Baxterville students will need these later.

4.  In November, chess will be our strategic game.  Some students know a little about chess, but most still do not know all the rules and/or the specifics of check, checkmate and/or stalemate.  Please encourage your child in this endeavor.  It is not an easy game to master, but all my students in the past have learned the basics and were able to play chess.

5.  I encourage everyone to participate in our class blog.  Go to http://kidblog.org/MrsAmayas6thGradeEXCEL/ to post your comments.

Parents:

PLEASE JOIN LCGC
You may be wondering, "What is LCGC?"  Well, LCGC stands for "Lamar County for Gifted Children" which is like a PTO but for EXCEL.  LCGC members will address the needs and concerns of our gifted program.   There will be periodic meetings where members can discuss ways to help our students and teacher.  While members are encouraged to attend these meetings, they are not mandatory.  If your time is limited, please consider joining anyway and you will be kept updated by email and/or newsletters.  The more parents we have the stronger this group will be an the greater impact you can have!   LCGC is associated with MAGC (MS Association for Gifted Children).  You, our parents, are important advocates for your children and our gifted program.  The $10 membership fee per family, will be used to help address the needs of the Oak Grove EXCEL program.  If you misplaced the form we sent home, please request another, and we will gladly send one to you.

The best way to reach me is by email at nadine.amaya@lamarcountyschools.org.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Your support of your children and the EXCEL program is greatly appreciated!

What is EXCEL?

EXCEL stands for Exceptional Children's Education in Lamar County. "It is our mission to empower all students with the knowledge and skills to create their own futures; to become passionate, lifelong learners; and to contribute cooperatively to a diverse and changing world."

The EXCEL program serves children who have been identified as having high intellectual abilities through enrichment opportunities to study a variety of topics not offered in the regular curriculum. Placement of gifted students is governed by specific state mandated policies. Students must qualify through a sequential referral process to be eligible for gifted services.

Our first unit will incorporate RESEARCH.  We will follow the Independent Investigation Method which teaches middle school students the steps and procedures to successfully complete a research product.  To learn more about this method, please click on the link at the bottom of this page.

To perform successfully in the Independent Investigation Unit, students must fully understand the research process, which is illustrated below.

IIM Process

While writing, for some, is easy and fun, EXCEL students will realize that the journey from an idea to a finished product can be a long one.  A clear understanding of the research process is very important.

Date Reminder

“Helping students prepare for the challenges of tomorrow”

The mission of the Lamar County School District is
to empower all students with the knowledge and skills to create their own futures; to become passionate, lifelong learners; and to contribute cooperatively to a diverse and changing world.

The state of Mississippi has provided us with  a great database, designed just for K-12 researchers, called MAGNOLIA!! The neat thing about MAGNOLIA is that it contains lots of kid friendly databases that can be accessed from school or home.  (If you are at home when you access MAGNOLIA, you may need a username/password.  If so, use "magn0897").

To cyberjump immediately to MAGNOLIA, go to the links section at the end of this page.  Once there, young researchers will find many database choices.  One of my favorite is MAGNOLIA for middle school students.  If your child wants to be more "info savvy" they may try out other databases in MAGNOLIA like the following great choices:

EBSCO Animals; Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia; Master File Premier; Middle Search Plus; Newspaper Source; or Grolier Online.  Students have been reminded to always have a parent's permission and supervision when using the internet for research.

Students are encourage to use Magnolia for other school projects or just to learn more on their own about topics they are interested in!!
