Mr. Shock Social Studies Pirates Team 8th Gr. Social Studies 2010-2011 Pirates Team Teachers: Ms. Jones, Math Ms. Painter, Science Mr. Shock, Social Studies Ms. Harmon, Language Arts Important Dates April 18th: High School Registration (In SS Class) April 25th: Computer Competency Test (In SS Class) May 10, 15, 16: 8th Grade EOG's! May 25th: Last day for 4th Quarter Projects! For Parents: Welcome to my website! This 8th Grade Social Studies class is your child's first dedicated history class, which they will encounter more of in high school and beyond. Our curriculum is North Carolina History, but could be described as "US History through the eyes of North Carolina." While this core subject class does NOT have an EOG, our curriculum helps prepare your child for EOC tests in Civics and US History in high school. As a secondary goal of the 8th grade year, we are preparing your child for the different realm of expectations that high school is. Availability by phone: I am available during my planning period (9:00 - 10:30 AM), and usually after school until at least 3:00. As a rule, I will NOT answer off-campus calls during class, as this disrupts the learning process for your child as well as all the other students. The school telephone number is: 704-638-5561, and my extension is 145. Availability by email: My email address is: shockea@rss.k12.nc.us. I check this email several times a day, and at least once a day during the weekend. Please email me with any questions or concerns. Often, this is the best way to get in contact with me as opposed to playing "phone tag" for several days. Availability for Conferences: When not teaching your children in class, I do stay very busy, but I and my teammates are always open to meeting with you whenever possible! However, due to the number of meetings, appointments, conferences with other parents, and other duties we teachers have as professionals, I kindly ask that you please arrange a conference with myself or your child's homeroom teacher as opposed to stopping by, as we may not be able to meet with you at that time, or give your concerns the full attention they deserve. Other means of communication: Your child's agenda is the most important tool our team has to keep in contact with you! Please feel free to write notes to myself or your child's other teachers in the agenda. Additionally, please check your child's agenda each night for homework, upcoming events, or notes from us. For Students: Please remember that you will have a quiz every Friday. Assignments are posted on the information board on the right-hand side of the room (to the left of the TV). Regarding projects, PLEASE make the effort to turn your project in ahead of time. If you turn it in early, I will grade and give it back to you for corrections (which means you can be sure it is a 100%!!!!!). If you wait until the last few days to turn it in, you will have to accept whatever grade you get! Important Information For All: We have a VERY limited supply of textbooks, and students wishing to take a book home must sign it out and bring it back the next morning. Several parents have asked me if an exception could be made for their child, so the child may have a book at home. Because of such a low number of textbooks, this simply is not possible. The textbook IS available online: http://ncjourneys.com with a username and password that will be provided to your child at the beginnning of the year. |
